Boulez has bad hair, and his dog smells funny!

Said the guy who puts Stockhausen up on some kind of godly pedestal. Please...
I don't have very much interest in listening to Stockhausen's music on a regular basis (like I listen to Boulez), but I truly admire his approach to music and especially his extraordinarily eye(ear?)-opening techniques of improvisation he advocates for musicians. There are a number of pieces I absolutely love from Stockhausen though, so I am thankful that these masterpieces exist.

I'd listen to Boulez any day of the week before I'd listen to another note of Stockhausen and that's saying a lot.

That's the thing about Boulez. He brings out the worst in people ;).

Jessop, how many recordings do you have of Le marteau?

Nice try, Karl,... nice try... now... back to the flogging!!

I must have two recordings of Le marteau, but I have not done anything like a comparison.  I am inclined to doubt that I need (say) a third recording . . . but I am curious to know the thoughts of a fellow composer who has heard "the lot."

The word on the street is that the first recording is still the best, and it kind of goes downhill from there, in order,... oh, and of course I'm speaking of his own recordings,... since,... no one would dare,... Karl?,... have you dared???

And the first is the Adda? Then, CBS? Is there a third one before the latest DG?

Well, say on; inquiring minds want to know!
On a re-examination, I realise I have 4 rather than 5. Two in Le Domain Musicale box, one in Oeuvres Complètes box (another of those being represented on disc 1 of Le Domain Musicale) and another one conducted by Robert Craft I believe. Once my score arrives in the mail I will look at the composition in more detail.

Cool;  I've also got the two Le Domaine musical performances, and (I should guess) is it the 20/21 release which was reissued in the Oeuvres Complètes box?  I should be really interested at some point to hear the Craft, partly because it's Craft, and partly because, well, all the recordings I have heard were conducted by the composer.  Not at all a bad thing, of course;  I am just interested to hear how a separate musical mind puts the piece together.  At any rate, I should spend some time in some comparative listening, myself . . . .

It's a whole new world of Boulez when it's someone else's interpretation! I would like to know what other non-Boulez recordings are available of Le Marteau.....
