Why is so much of the best recordings of Schumann both

A) Old and;
B) OOP, or on a weird label?

It is very confusing.

I have a few bits of Schumann by Horowtiz, but I don't like him as a pianist in general.

I want to hear early Rubinstein, Cortot, early Arrau and Richter, but nothing seems easily available.

Can anyone help me out?

val

Old pianists?

Horowitz in the Kreisleriana, Sonata opus 14, the Kinderszenen, the Fantasiestücke opus 111.

Nat in the Papillons, Fantasia opus 17, Noveletten, Humoresque.

Moiseiwitsch in the Fantasia and Etude Symphoniques.

Richter in the Etudes Symphoniques.

Engel in Bunte Blätter, Gesang der frühe, Humoresque.

Geza Anda in the Davidsbuntlertänze.

Michel

Thats all well and good, Val, but I know that kind of information; the problem is in having such information, where to then find the exact CD,s on which label, etc.

Drasko's post shows the kind of issues faced; who the hell is the Regis label, for example? And is that pearl disc worth it? And from what year is the Rubinstein?

SimonGodders

The Rubinstein is from the late 40's and early 50's. Very good sound for it's age and some of the best Schumann playing on disc, with a Carnaval to rival (Surpass? Yeah I'll say it as Sidoze isn't here at present!!! ;D) Sofronitsky.

Go for it dude...

A godsend, that's who - reissues of Richter in solo Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov (thread here), the unmissable Bashmet/Richter/Kogan Shostakovich Violin and Viola Sonatas and loads more besides, and at Naxos prices. They aren't an obscure or hard-to-track-down label either, in my experience.

For instance, the Schumann disc you're talking about is quite simply sitting waiting for you at Amazon, for £4.99.

So the transfers are good, etc?

And what else on the label should I order, except that which you mentioned, which is in the cart already.

Also, does anyone know that year the Mravinsky Shosta 8 is on the label - I've been looking for this for a while, but want the debut performance. Is that it?

They are Michel.

If you need more info about Cortot's Schumann transfers, I suggest going here.

If you use their search engine, you can find out all kinds of stuff. Just be sure to wade through the trolls.  ::)

You will find Yves Nat in the box with 4 CD from EMI. But the sound is very, very bad. The recordings are from 1939 to 1957.

Regarding Geza Anda I have the DG version in the "Centenary Collection". It is from 1966.

Haskil is on the famous Philips CD, with the Piano Concerto, Kinderszenen and Waldszenen (1951 to 1955).

Moiseiwitsch is on Testament (1954).

Horowitz is on CBS (opus 7, 15, 16, 18 and 19), from 1963 to 1969. But regarding the 3rd Sonata I have the version of 1975, live in Carnegie Hall (RCA).

Karl Engel, as far as I know is only available in the VALOIS Box with Schumann's complete piano work. In my opinion it is a very good investment.

I was going to grab this bad boy from EBay this morning, but the price went too high for me, given how much stuff I have bought recently!!!

A  more curious question for me is how come there are so few recordings of Davidsbundlertanze  ???

carlos

About Carnaval op.9, I stay with the great Rachmaninoff.
And for the Symphonic Etudes, Cziffra had a fantastic
recording. For the second sonata and in particular the
Papillons, Richter is unique! :) :)

That one is from 1982, but what do you mean by debut performance? Premiere was in 1943 but wasn't recorded.

Premiere recording is this one from 1947

UK premiere is this on BBC from 1960, which I really like inspite the noisy audience

"I am going to record these piece called... eeh... David's Burlant... Davis Burnt Tense..., never mind I'll just record another Fantasia" :D

Seriously, there was a good discussion about the piece in the old forum, before the database was gone ( I think started by Herman), I wish we could resurrect that somehow.

I'd say it's not as popular as Carnaval, Kinderszenen, Sym. Etudes or Kreisleriana.  Still, it's my favorite Schumann piano work.  No idea why my tastes don't seem to correspond to that of the majority.

I can't tell you how many products have been cancelled after I began to use them regularly. I'd say that its nice to know that someone else is in a similar boat, but then I wouldn't wish this on anyone.  :-\

I have this experience quite frequently. Just during the last year: Coke C2 was the best soft drink product I'd tasted since... well Coke. Then it's off the shelves in 6 months. Neutregena had this product whose fragrance got me hooked on, and the same fate for that one as well :(
