I just want to introduce to you Yuja Wang. I just read an article about her in Ionarts (see link below), and after hearing her performances on YouTube (links below), I immediately became a fan. Wow!, I thought only Volodos could play these pieces with virtuosic excitement and clarity. Sorry if I have to borrow the YouTube title, I just want to share my excitement about this new artist.

Sorry, but no thanks. I heard Yuja Wang live last year in Prokofiev PC2 and she had absolutely nothing to say musically. She can hit all the notes very clearly, but that's about it. There is no particular attention to phrasing, coloring or voicing, no story, no dramatic arc. There was no dialogue between piano and orchestra (and she certainly had a more than competent conductor in Dutoit). I don't hear anything in the youtube clips that changes that impression. There is no atmosphere, no humor and no rhythmic lilt in her Carmen fantasy, e.g. It's very square. Very little dynamic differentiation, too. There are dozens of other pianists I'd rather pay money to hear.

Hard to say.  The two youtube links just offer music requiring virtuosity.  So I'd have to hear her play something with more meat to it.

Hi Don, her main site (see initial post) has more examples of her playing. Click the "MY MUSIC" tab on her site and you'll get other sample videos and you could even download MP3s for sample audios. Let me know of your opinion afterwards. Thanks.

As for me, I'm an easy listener to please, virtuosic performances gets my blood pumping. That's probably why I like Martha Argerich.

Well it did not do much for me really.......

Are you primarily interested in musicians that are young, attractive and female, or is it just my imagination?   8)

Nice imagination Q.  :)

Btw, do you know some young, attractive, female conductors?  ;)

I saw one once, on the train between Cologne and Muenster.  (No, not Herman!)

This one is debatable:

Well, Marin Alsop is still comparatively young by conductors' standards. ;)
Imagination + discipline = creativity

... but hardly qualifies for the second required attribute.
