I would guess I had about 850 CDs... not sure, maybe I'll count them when I get home. And 3 LPs!

Around 1100 cds. I did a count and it turns out my estimate was wrong, I hadn't counted in a couple of years -- I have actually close to 1250 cds, almost all classical.

Seriously though....the question for me is what happens to all these cds after I am no more??

We have had 2 lengthy threads on this very topic.

There you go:
Have you made arrangements for your CD collection when you....
CDs: You can't take them with you.

How many do I have? I don't know the exact count, but it's enough to last me many years.

How many discs is too many?  ;D

To have more CDs than Harry is too many. So, as Harry's collection grows, the line between "just enough" and "too many" changes as well.

I can't remember if I posted in this thread or not, but I have over 3,500 CDs.  I don't really know how many.  One thing I do know is that I've decided to cull my collection a bit - by say 400-500 lesser recordings.  I've already identifed about a hundred CDs to offload, and I have to keep reviewing my collection for others to dump.  Who knows if I get to my goal or not . . .  (The reason for the culling is space - I don't have any left!)

I've heard of folks who rent mini-storage units to increase their inventory capacity.  I can't see doing that myself, so I also sometimes cull my collection.  Lately, it's been Boccherini and other second-string composers of the baroque and classical eras.

Since December 1991 I have been buying cds at the rate of 11 a month.

I could not possibly have bought more without serious financial suffering.

Either there are some very rich people here or some very poor ones ;D ;D

That's a bit too much for me.  I can't imagine explaining that to my wife.  One thing I have started doing is ripping the CDs I sell and simply keeping them on my hard-drive (with a backup).  In that case, if ever I decide that I want to hear a dearly departed CD again, I can just burn a new copy.

That's the only way to go.  Play music that drives a spouse to drink (or into tigress mode).

I simply buy a bigger house if space is needed. ;)

It seems my collection is still rather modest! ;D It's in the region of 1800-1900 now.
That number is derived by the rule of thumb: nr of shelves multiplied by the nr of CD's on one shelf. I do not register them (no time and I don't see the point), nor are they all ripped (unfortunately).

But I am a continuous culler: I offload 70-100 CD's each year. I only cull after long consideration, which works fine - never missed an item once gone.

Q

Kuhlau

Culling is good, and often necessary. Over the past 17 years, I've probably spent about £10,000 on CDs (a conservative estimate, I'm sure). If all of the discs I'd bought were still in my collection, I'd have close to 3,000 or so CDs, possibly more. So if my most recent approximate 'stock count' is correct, then I must have offloaded at least 500-700 releases in the past decade. (Not all classical, though.)

The last time I posted here was a year and half ago and I had close to 400 CDs all classical.  I am now up to 610 CDs  :o....... ;D!  I bought 210 CDs over the past year or so, mostly box sets (the Bach sacred cantatas Leonhardt 60 CDs, the Schubert EMI boxset, the Schumann complete piano works, 2 complete Mahler symphony cycles (Solti/Bertini), 3 Complete Shosty symphony cycles (Barshai/Jansons/Haitink) to name a few). Christmas is approaching and my Brahms collection needs beefing up so who knows how the year will end  ;D!

My purchasing habits will taper off next year.  I have very little interest in Baroque music beyond J.S. Bach and Classical music beyond Mozart. Beethoven & Schubert I consider Early Romantic  ;)

Yes all that's left now is Brahms............BRAHMS !!  I am planning a massive Brahms purchase by the end of this year.  I've got my eye on that Brahms complete works boxset on the Brilliant label.  Any ideas??

Was the same with me for many, many years. Chances are that one day that will change dramatically! :)

Brahms is my old favourite as well. I've learned that the right performance was for me essential in Brahms, perhaps more than in any other composer. So, based on that experience I'll advise you to handpick your Brahms recordings.

This is so true.
