This is a very special record, isn't it?

I'll order this one!
What do you think about the record by Carlos Kleiber, Julia Varady and Lucia Popp?
Why did the greatest singers make it together?
Can you introduce some other records with all great singers.

Morigan

Actually, I'm looking for a good DVD version of Die Fledermaus... There are many out there and I simply can't choose.

Harry

And may I join the band, and also ask for a recommendation for the Fledermaus, I saw this one and a few others...

Harry

2 :)

The big problem with this set is that it has the ghastly falsetto Orlovsky of Ivan Rebroff. I just can't take to it. Admittedly Karajan's 1st recording has a tenor Orlovsky in Rudolf Christ, but he is so good, he almost convinces. The other singers on this recording (Schwarzkopf, Streich, Gedda, Kunz) are really special and Karajan's conducting has real fizz. I prefer it even to his second stereo version for Decca.

Common, I expect more advice from you, being a expert in the field. I posted some recordings in which I have to make a choice, and I know you are on the inside of it all.
I am quite serious about it, so if you will advise me about the recordings I posted. :)

I am thinking of this one...

Are you asking me, Harry? I'm not sure I would be the right person to ask, as we evidently hear singers with very different ears.

Well you answered me, that's a good thing!
I consider you very much in the know, concerning these old recordings, and the voices of that time, and since my knowledge about them is almost zero, I think you could give good advice, since you know the voices that I like.
Furthermore I have a tendency to like the voices of old, and you can see what I ordered so far.

Not sure really, though, what you mean by the voices of old, Harry. Callas is of the same generation and you clearly can't stand her, so I'd rather not make suggestions and leave it to someone else.

Two more, of which Fricsay is very good indeed.

The fact that I don't like the voice of Callas is a fact, but you can see the ones I selected, and the voices on it, surely you could guide me in this?

Harry

Well maybe Knight, also a opera expert would like to offer suggestions?

Harry

The more I hear from both of these, the more I like them

Well I can only talk about the ones I have heard, which, amongst those mentioned so far, are both Karajan performances, the Kleiber and the Boskovsky. The Kleiber I discount for the reasons already mentioned. The other three are all excellent, and, if my personal preference is for Karajan I, that is because I love Schwarzkopf's Rosalinde and Gedda's Einstein (none better). Streich is also, IMO, the best Adele of the 3 (Erika Koth's voice has become a little fluttery by this time, and Renate Holm is quite simply outclassed). The Decca Karajan set is a lavish production, with the inclusion of a gala sequence, in which famous singers from the Decca stable give their party turn. It is great fun (Nilsson's Wagnerian soprano completely overpowering the simple "I could have danced all night" from My Fair Lady, Bastianini and Simionato hamming it up uproariously in "Anything you can do I can do better", from Annie Get Your Gun), that sort of thing), but is not something I would want to listen to all that often. Of course you can program it out, so it's no problem. Karajan's conducting is superb in both, and he does have the VPO on Decca, though the Philharmonia are by no means out classed,  He also enjoys excellent Decca stereo sound. Boskovsky is also stereo, and is also an extremely enjoyable performance, but operates, to my mind, on a slightly lower voltage than either Karajan set.

Thank you very much!
This is extremely helpful.
I will of course buy the Boskovsky set, and both Karajan's recording.
Have you anything to add about this recording?
Do you know the singers, and if this conductor did well?
The 1949 recording does not bother me at all.
What do you think?

Can you find any records with Anna Moffo?
