I haven't heard him in a decade, but I remember King Diamond (formerly of Mercyful Fate) had some interesting vocal techniques to show. "Abigail" and "Them" were two albums that I used to listen to a lot, and mostly because of their conceptual lyrics and KD's voice.

Those are really cool albums. I love "Fatal Portrait" and "Don't Break the Oath".

Yes. DBTO is a Mercyful Fate album though, right? I still remember some of the introductory words in 'The Oath' -cause back then we thought it was cool to know the intitiation oath  :P
Something like: "By the symbol of the creator, I swear henceforth to be a *something* servant to his most puissant(?) arch angel.. Prince Lucifer...  " >:D

The most pressing issue is that most metal utilising normal singers that is not derivative tends to be... to put it colloquially "gay" (not a word I really throw around, but the negative kind of contexts that its users direct it to tend to really almost all do apply to melodic power metal).

Yeah, that is how I would describe most of that stuff.  Nothing that there is not some better 80s metal.  Guess Mike Patton is all there is nowdays

I still love it though, I just can't listen to it with anybody else in the room ;D ;D The child-like happiness and cheese factor can be super.

I'm sort of a late-comer to "metal". I'm very picky and this list could have been at least half Judas Priest albums because they're my overall favorite--but I restrained myself. I've tried listening to all the major acts and don't like a lot of them all that much. And some of these I guess you wouldn't call "metal" but then I'm more of a hard rock dude anyway...

Black Sabbath – Paranoid
Blue Oyster Cult – Secret Treaties
Destroyer 666 – Cold Steel...For An Iron Age
Faith No More – Album of the Year
Grand Magus – Wolf's Return
Judas Priest – Screaming For Vengeance
Old – Down With the Nails
Queen – Sheer Heart Attack
The Sword – Gods of the Earth
Venom – Welcome to Hell
