  Funny you should say that, Uffe, I was thinking the same thing.  Although I DID tend to agree with him politically a bit more than you do. Not completely, of course...

Yes, Paul; he was a tremendous help in enlarging my vocabulary. My dictionaries got a workout listening to him. Oh and what a way of speaking! An orator!

The style he presented his conservative opinions was never offensive, always intelligent, polite but firm. - The hate-mongering ultra conservative Rush L. could have learned a lot from WFB! -

I agree with you, Springrite.  My husband and I used to watch Firing Line every week.  How he (Buckley) loved to tickle the brain with his prose.  I can still remember the mischief in his eyes as he drove a point home.  Great fun!  I am sorry he is gone.  My husband enjoyed the politics; I liked the wordplay.

Well put Paul.  The mild slouch in the chair was key.  I remember enjoying reading his book Overdrive: A Personal Documentary which was an autobiography over a one week period.  Fascinating read.

When George Will (who I thouroughly enjoy reading) interviewed him somewhat recently, he asked WFB if he had any regrets.  He said that he wished he had learned to play the Goldberg Variations, I believe from memory.

    He was a huge influence on me, and I'm sure on many others who watched him on Firing Line in the '60s and '70s. He would talk to an amazing variety of people on his show: Eldridge Cleaver, Ayn Rand, Norman Thomas, Jack Kerouac, Janet Baker (!).....

After watching Firing Line in the 80s and demolishing liberal opponents who could not formulate logical arguments for their positions, I remember seeing Rush Limbaugh get his head handed to him by none other than Phil Donahue.  That was the last time I saw Rush try to debate someone in a neutral setting.

Boris i am as liberal as anyone else but the guys dead and he did state his points very articulately, and with alot more respect than the jackasses such as Rush L. and Sean Hannity. I didn't agree with him but i respected him.

I was listening to an item on the radio about him. One act was said to typify his approach to people. Seemingly he was pursued very aggressively by another academic who worked in the same university as he. This went on for years. The other guy fell into debt and it became public knowledge. Buckley paid the debt off. Although various less kind complexions could be put on the act; it was said to spring out of generosity.

BTW Paul; if you want to denigrate an entire country full of people, do try to type it correctly; otherwise all we Brits will be assumed to be illiterate, with a similarly sound justification.
