As i strolled through Barns and Noble and Borders today (the only places with a sizable classical section anywhere near me) i found what must have been 25- 30 recordings of Mahler, yet there was not ONE, NOT ONE Bruckner recording in either of the stores. What in the world is that all about. I found it almost as ridiculous as the what seemed like 1,000 cd's of Mozart. Is Mahler such a better composer than Bruckner to get a vast selection of works for sale when Bruckner has 0. I say NO!

This might just be in my part of the world but does anyone else see this, and if so what do you think about it?

Ugh.  Places like that have always got terrible selections anyway.  I buy 99% of my stuff online or download it now because I can rarely ever find what I'm looking for otherwise.

greg

maybe they're all sold out?  :o
lol, maybe not.

that's odd to find so many Mahler recordings, yet no Bruckner...... but the 1,000 CDs of Mozart is way too common.
Basically, there's some good places and some not-so-good places. At the mall I used to go to, they had like a zillion CDs of Adams, even a Schnittke CD. Basically the same with Borders. But not in any of the stores around where i live now.  ::)

notserp89m

honestly i find Mahler's music immature when compared to Bruckner's music, thats a shame he has so many spots on the rack when Bruckner has none. and i agree that the best shopping is done online

At my local Borders it's like this, too.  They've recently got a few new Bruckner discs, but overall there's about 20+ Mahler records (a good thing, imo), but only a tad of Anton. :(

I just did a few quick searches on ebay and got Bruckner (28), Mahler (54), and Mozart (257). That seems a little more reasonable. I wonder how the buyers for places like Barnes and Noble make their purchasing decisions?

Is it, perhaps, explained by the fact that Mahler's star is, seemingly, still enjoying an ascendency in current times?

Well, the last shop I looked at, I can tell you that there were only a few CDs of Bruckner and Mahler, but Bruckner had slightly more. So I guess it varies from shop to shop, depending on what they happen to order a lot of at the time. In my case, it was probably a fluke though because the classical section was generally pretty poor anyway.

That being said, everyone knows Mahler is better than Bruckner anyway! ;D

At my local B&N they do carry a few Bruckner CDs and a disproportionately large number of Mahler CDs.  The last time I looked there were no worthwhile Bruckner CDs except Jochum's EMI box set at double the price of Amazon.com.  There have been exceptions, but generally when I am looking for a particular recording, it's not available at my local B&N store.

Or maybe there are more Mahler CDs in the store because the customers bought all the Bruckners.    ;)     ;D

Consider the total recordings offered on arkivmusic.com:

Bruckner = 588
Mahler = 948

Here in Albuquerque, there are many more Mahler discs than Bruckner at Borders.  Mahler is in these days.

Bruckner gets far more "respect" than Xenakis (and rightly so).  I would like Xenakis to be more available, though.

But as for Borders and Barnes, they RARELY have Bruckner.  It's a shame.

Unfortunately, Britney Spears trumps Bruckner and Mahler put together!! She is better than Mahler by a ratio of about 12:1!!!

Incredibly, sex is nearly 400 times better than Gustav Mahler.

there's no way sex can even be better than Mahler- i wouldn't exactly know, but i couldn't fathom anything in the world being better than a Mahler symphony.
a Mahler symphony compared to anything else that's awesome- girls, cars, roller coasters, whatever...... there's just no comparison, really.

btw, Brittney Spears is disgusting.

Wait, Greg, did you forget that every one of Mahler's symphonies "embraces everything"? So comparing them with girls and cars are redundant really, as they are already in the music. You just have to use more imagination  ;D
