A few years ago I got dandruff and couldn't understand why it had come. When I stopped using that particular shampoo, flakes were gone.
Now I keep using shampoo, but what other alternatives do I have? Soap? Mostly it's made of the same stuff, and I wonder how they dare ;D produce it when it is obviously harmful for hair. My mother complained that her hair deteriorated when she had started using shampoo.

Fortunately I do not have to use creams, lipstick, powder and many-many other frightening things. ;D Plus Californian sun, and the skin would shrink!

E..L..I..A..S.. =), show us your hair. :)

The purpose of shampoo is to clean your hair of anything that made it dirty - including grease, sweat, dust or anything it has accumulated.
This presupposes that the dirt is water soluble, not something like oil-based paint.

Dirt which is water soluble would be removed by water alone.  Shampoo is essentially a detergent which allows water insoluble substances to become soluble in water.  A soap molecule has one hydrophobic (hates water) side which sticks to the greasy thing and one hydrophilic (loves water) side which allows it to go into solution, taking the greasy thing with it.  This way the greasy thing goes into solution and is washed away.

If something can't be removed with soap that means it dissolves neither in water nor in oil.

If you want you can wash your hair with soap.  Shampoo has some extra ingredients which prevent the hair from getting too dried out after washing, it's essentially a weak/gentle soap.

My hair is all rumpled in the morning

Mine too, but as long as I am a student, I don't care! :D

Then we need some acid...

I took a picture today, but I haven't shampooed in a few days. Maybe I should shampoo tomorrow and then take a picture, or I can always use the nether region hair as a control :) But I doubt you would wanna see a before and after of that...I'm going to try not to shampoo until April, just water.

This might work

Has anyone tried Skunk Off?  Does it work?  If the dog gets sprayed by a skunk here in Michigan, he gets a bath in tomato juice.  Is Skunk Off available in the US?

By the way, what is the quality of water in San Diego (you live there, right?) ? Did you measure pH level?  ;D
I know that the running water is usually being purified with some chemicals, after it becomes hard water. They make media basic because germs inhabit acidic environment, so they would die. Hard water dries skin and hair (you will tell us!), so maybe shampoos, as I assume they have slightly acidic properties, balance that pH level and as a result you get nice neutral water... Maybe. I learned that water in LA, at least in my district, is ozonized, not chlorized or fluorized, but I do not completely believe in it.
Too many problems to worry about, sooner or later we all will die. ;D

on what little hair I have I use soap, to no apparent detriment.

Ah, thought I was the only one.  :D

Well I am living in Tijuana Mexico, where the water smells like century old eggs. So yes, it probably does damage to my skin, my feet I've noticed are drier than ever. It's bad enough that I rather eat the pesticides on food instead of washing them in that water.

We've never tried Skink Off, but a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing detergent in a bucket of water seems to work best for our beagle. The tomato juice just seemed to leave him smelly and pink.

I get stinky and greasy hair if I don't wash it...I use shampoo everyday although I think it might be too much...I think that's why my hair is too dry nowadays.

I shampoo everyday.  If I don't, I feel like I'm unclean, I feel itchy, etc.  On the weekend, if i'm not going out, I give my hair some rest.

I'll give your recipe to my mother-in-law as she is the one using tomato juice.  Fortunately I've never had to clean a dog of skunk oder.  Thank you.
