I am very poor at keeping track of newly released classical cds that may be worth owning.  I was hoping that this thread might help me, as well as others, that do not subscribe to any classical magazines, keep track of potential purchases.  So, what are any new releases that have come out in the past calendar year that you would recommend?  These can also be re-releases of old favorites that have been repackaged as well.  If you have the time, short review would also be helpful.  Thanks!
There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

This was only released in Germany recently, so for the moment it is cost-prohibitive for most.  :D

A "paulb sampling" unveiled spirited playing with exceptional sound recording.

Bill - check out the 'what are you considering' thread (or whatever the name might be?) - I've been routinely putting in a list from Fanfare magazine, and have purchased about half the recommendations, some absolutely wonderful recordings.

Currently, that is the only classical musical magazine that I'm subscribed to - would be nice if there were a website that tracked a bunch of these magazines (or other sources of reviews like the online guides) and provided a list of recent recommendations - anyone know of such a site or service?

I will keep a more watchful eye on your purchases Dave.  A site would be fantastic.

I wonder why 2 was shelved....my Tokyo SQ cd only has 1 and 3 as well.

BRAHMS | Symphonies Nos 2 and 3
Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Marek Janowski

The performances strike me as just about perfect. The sound quality is fabulous and the playing in every way trumps Alsop's recent Brahms cycle with the London Philharmonic. A must-have.

* * *

BEETHOVEN | Symphonies Nos 1 and 6
Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vanska

Those following Vanska's series will know this one is a keeper!

* * *

SCRIABIN | Sonatas Nos 2, 5, 8; Four Mazurkas; etc.
Yevgeny Sudbin

If Vegas dealt in classical music, I'd bet Yevgeny Sudbin will be the greatest pianist of the 21st century.

* * *

KALOMIRIS | Triptychon, Symphony No 3
Athens State Orchestra, Byron Fidetzis

Late-romantic Greek masterworks, lavishly orchestrated and full of energy - a true find!

* * *

MENDELSSOHN | Three string quartets
New Zealand String Quartet

One of my new favorite CDs, though I must note that I have heard no other performances of these works.

* * *

SMETANA | Complete Orchestral Works
Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra, Theodore Kuchar

Due for release April 1, this should be a great set.

XB-70 Valkyrie

Interesting recommendations. Please keep them coming. I've been so interested in historical recordings for so long, I've missed a whole lot of the current stuff.

As far as I'm concerned, we could expand this thread to include good recordings from the last five years!
If you really dislike Bach you keep quiet about it! - Andras Schiff

It is a single CD.

Bill if you don't have the BAT duo for Brahms you might want to consider it to have it all, they're also pretty good. :)

Complete cycle for under $16.  Just added to my wishlist David.  Thanks much.

The Decca "Richter the Master" series of 2-CD sets makes available once more performances that were last around on the Richter Authorized Edition on Philips. I can attest that volume 3 (Scriabin, Prokofiev, Shostakovich) is a great one to get. Perhaps others will chime in with recommendations for other specific volumes.

I will re-chime for Volume 3.

My favorite new release of the year so far is Daniel Hope's recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (coupled with a good enough Octet) on DG. A couple other interesting new releases are Gustavo Dudamel's "Fiesta!", also on DG, Karlowicz symphonic poems in glorious performances by the Warsaw Philharmonic (Naxos), and also on Naxos, a compilation of American string quartets, including works by Antheil, Glass, and Bernard Herrmann.

MishaK

These are among my top choices for the year:

Absolutely my favorite Alpensinfonie hands down. Brilliant pacing throughout, great sense for dramatic arc without overdoing individual effects, wonderful colors and balance.

Transparent, yet rich. Incredibly well played, and with sonics that allow you to revel in the quality of the performance.

B_cereus

i have pre-ordered this CD due for release next week...

nice unusual coupling with a rarely heard work, instead of the usual Elgar, that actually makes good sense with the Dvorak :)

Paul Moravec's third collection on Naxos is imho the best yet:

I found this set of Jennifer Higdon's chamber works (titled Summer Shimmers; that's none too clear in the image) very appealing:

This recent disc of Eric Ewazen's music is fine, a good intro to his work:

Oddly enough, I can't find the Ewazen at Arkivmusic, but Amazon has it, and of course you can order it straight from Albany Records as well.

Great idea for a thread Bill!
