i've been building a fricsay library.  he's a very entertaining conductor, if you are not familiar w/him, he's worth a listening.
many of the regulars here have known of him for quite awhile.

so far, i've got -

verdi: requiem
beethoven: sym 9
dvorak: sym 9
smetana: moldau
liszt: les preludes
tchaikovsky: sym 4, 5, & 6, and various waltzes
bizet: carmen, l'arlesienne suites
stravinsky: rite of spring
hartmann: sym 6
rossini: overtures
mozart: 2 disc set of sym/serenades
...and some odds/ends

most of these are with the berlin philharmonic and berlin radio symphony

anything else i need to hear by fricsay?  this has been a very rewarding project for me.

thanx

Check out Fricsay's DG recording of Mozart's Mass in C minor with the glorious singing of Maria Stader.

Beethoven 3rd Piano Concerto performed by Annie Fischer/Fricsay is marvellous, and my favourite. But the below set is probably difficult to find at the moment. As it was a DG release it will probably be rereleased after a while, and then you should snap it up! :) I also very much like his recording of the Beethoven 7th symphony in the same set.

I have the Fricsay recording of the Tchaikovsky 5th symphony. Do you find the 4th and 6th on the same level? They are for sure tempting.

(poco) Sforzando

A friend swears by his Fidelio, but be aware that the dialogue portions are spoken by actors, whose voices don't well match those of the parallel singers.
"I don't know what sforzando means, though it clearly means something."

the 6th (dg) i have was recorded abnout 1960 and is great.  the 4th (dg) was recorded 1950.  there is a little sound difference, but it has a refreshing interpretation for my ears.  the 5th should be here today!

He was one of the very finest Strauss conductors ever - best Wiener Blut I've heard. Not much is available: about one disc worth in DG box Fricsay - life in music or separately on DG France.

Also, excellent all Strauss concert with Peter Anders on Gebhardt:

Kodaly disc on DG is also superb, and you probably should consider that DG box at some point.

This Mozart PC's 19 & 27 with Clara Haskil is one of my favorite versions of these concerti. 2 very good Mozartians!

There is (was?) a great DGG Fricsay boxed set with a Tchaikovsky No 6 even better than his commercial release on the same label.

I have his Magic Flute and that combines drama with humour. The singing is good. It is a set I return to, despite having half a dozen to choose from.

I'm also a Fricsay fan and can I suggest that you add this

There is also a 2 disc set with LvB Symphonies 3, 5 7 and 8 on it but it appears to be out of print. I have this if you are interested. While the Eroica is not to my taste the 7th and 8thy are excellent.

There is also his 1st symphony in the "Life in Music" box set.

Fricsay made two recordings of the Tchaikovsky 6th one for DG and a live one for Orfeo. The Orfeo is the better interpretation IMO.

the orfeo #5 should arrive any day now.

the hartmann disc did not turn me on much, but the others have been wonderful!

Fricsay made 3 recordings of the 6th.  One in mono for DG, one in stereo for DG, and then the live Orfeo.  The stereo 6th for DG was not completed to his liking before his death but it has been released on a Japanese cd and one recently domestically.

I have a Schubert 9th by Fricsay, on Tahra. Rather splendid. :)

The Fricsay recordings in this set are indeed marvelous, as well as the Bartók concertos disc with Anda that James mentioned.

His sparkling rendition of Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail from 1954 is well worth investigating, as well.

the fricsay/bpo 'new world' is very similar to in so many ways to the kubelik/cso, and is grrrreat for me!

Yes, excellent. while the Rossini won't beat the famed Reiner it is very good and the Bizet is a top recording as well.
