I'd like to replay ff9, but I lost my ps1 memory cards and they dont save on a ps2 memory card :( I know I can probably buy one for a few bucks, but umm where do they sell them anymore? I used to have like 5 memory cards, and they all disappeared.

I'm sure you can find them somewhere on the internet...

7- (often in video game magazines as the BEST VIDEO GAME ever made), this has a very complex and confusing story line that I'm not sure I got. And they kill Aeris! I only saw the scene a million times since it was so popular before I even got to that part, but when I did, it was still pretty sad.

I remember crying at that scene! What a prat.... :-\

Great game though, spent hours on it.

I like(d) playing adventures from time to time - several Myst games, Zork Nemesis (still a favourite of mine) and Zork Grand Inquisitor and the Rhem games (giant puzzles, brilliantly done). I also like playing text adventures (yes, they still exist), or as they are now called - Interactive Fiction (IF). In short - I like games where I have to wander through unknown worlds, using my brains...

Yeah good memories. I've played almost all FF games save the 12th installment because I haven't got the luxury of a time to play them. Video games are scary for me because I remember how I neglected my instrument when getting obsessed with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.  :P

Kullervo

Never had the patience to play any of the FF games through. I liked Chrono Trigger enough, but my favorite game from my childhood was Earthbound (called Mother 2 in Japan) for the SNES. If you've ever played any of the Super Smash Brothers games, you'd know the main character, Ness. The game doesn't take itself seriously and there are lots of weird jokes (several Beatles references — the creator was a fan) throughout the whole game. The music is also very fun and quirky.

Here is a good overview of the game.

Here is a page with all the in-game music.

Starmen.net is a site dedicated to the Mother/Earthbound series. These people have an unhealthy obsession with these games, but I most likely did as well when I was 12 years old. Now I'm old and over stuff like video games. :P

Life is too short.  Enjoy it, and don't live in some artificial cyber-world.
Real life sucks. Just look around and compare how it looks to a good-looking video game or an anime or whatever. No comparison, the real world is as ugly as two alligators humping.
If it were possible to physically live in a video game world, i wouldn't think twice about jumping in!  :D
(and this stuff i've thought about since i was young  8) )

Guys, I highly, HIGHLY recommend you play through VI (called III in the US.) It is an absolutely astounding game and superior to every other FF game that followed it (though VII came slightly--and I mean slightly--close.)

There's the 1994 version for the SNES (the one I recommend) and a version they did for the Playstation--all they gave this latter version is CGI cut scenes which, IMO, totally undermine the charm of the game as it was.

It has the best score too out of the entire series--every town, every character has their own little cute motif. I have never played, and don't think I will play, a greater game in my life.

The theme of the main villain of the game: http://youtube.com/watch?v=_A7jP8orL-U&feature=related

These are a few examples...

Ah, nostalgia!  ;D

I just realized recently that #6, which is was I'm playing right now, is the game you're talking about. Returning the game to the library today, but I've played about 10 hours of game time at least.......
if the game is this good all the way through, i can see why it's so highly thought of.

(btw, i don't see any CGI cut scenes, maybe there's some on 5, though....)

So, after reading and figuring out how the titles worked, it's like this-

the US Final Fantasies were:
1- Japan's 1
2- Japan's 4
3- Japan's 6
and then the US ones skip to 7....  :P

Wanderer

I've always liked the architectural and landscape extravaganzas in a number of these games, but never had the patience or inclination to get involved beyond some initial disjointed half-hour sessions in friends' houses.

Somehow, I'm not surprised that you're the Zork type. :D Although I'll have to admit that probably the only game I have ever played to have entirely and decisively overwhelmed me in the most negative sense was Myst!

It was likely that I as very young at the time; but the thought of returning to that eery, claustrophobic puzzle-world still distresses me. I prefer my adventure games with a dose of either humour or reality. Or preferred: may that noble genre rest in peace... :'(

Earthbound was the weapon through which a good friend finally succeeded in making me feel guilty for not having touched a console before the Playstation (in 1999 - I was an exclusive PC gamer until that time, and I still won't trade the PC for anything else, as a platform).

You, sir, are a discerning individual; what a jewel of a game!

About Final Fantasy, Greg, since I've only just discovered this thread and am still every bit as tired as I complained of being in another thread a few minutes ago, I'll put it on the list of threads to post in properly once I hold my cognitive capacity as up to the task, again. :P

P.S.: Suffice to say, the reason I finally did yield and got my hands on a console was Final Fantasy VII, and no less! 8)

I didn't notice that Myst post first time round. As this has turned into more general computer game discussion, I'd like to praise the similarly-styled puzzle adventure game The Longest Journey. A few moments in it were a bit of a pain, but generally it was fun to play and had a great setting. It was also stylistically quite nice and immersive - a lot of older games in this genre could become like viewing a slideshow of attractive locations rather than feeling part of them. I can't speak for the sequel, but from the sounds of it, it was at least decent.
