I have a Sony 9000ES  DVD, SACD player that has given me 7 years of yeoman service.
But it has developed what look like sound waves in the picture whenever I play a DVD. I think its time for a new model.
I have my eye on a Universal Player by Denon (DVD Video, DVD Audio, SACD and redbook CDs)  Model DVD3930CI. Lists for $1499.'

Anybody know anything about this player or similar players by Denon?

I'm sure that someone will suggest that I buy a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player. Well I would if that were an option. However Blu-Ray (none of them) don't handle CDs. And my HDTV has a maximum resolution of 1080i.
Purchasing a High Def Blu-ray or HD-DVD player will provide me with 1080p resolution, which is nice but my TV can't handle it.
The model that I have in mind will upconvert the DVD picture to 1080i, and it's a near top of the line model.

Buy a Playstation 2 (or 3, can't remember if it plays DVDs or not).  ;)

You're mentioning DVD player and writing $1499  ???
does that have a missing decimal point?

Get with the times and buy a VCR, already.

I see that there are very discriminating folk around here.
Sorry I wasted my time in asking.

Iago my friend, a serious answer to your question.
Denon builds good machines, the higher you go in price the better the picture quality gets.
I tested several Denon dvd players from budget to high end, and I can honestly say, there was not a bad player amongst them.
Reviewing was 6 months ago. 6 machines.

The 3930ci is a excellent player, if you can afford it buy it. But what ever you choose from Denon its oke!

Even if a player normally outputs 1080p, it can often be configured to output 1080i as well.   And keep in mind that there is little advantage in upsampling a 480 line video signal to 1080 lines.  The missing information can't be added back, and your high definition monitor is already doing the upsampling automatically.  When used with a high resolution disc HD-DVD or Blu-Ray gives you a true 1080 line video source, which is a  big improvement over DVD, no matter how good the player.

Thank you for that advice. But apparently you have ignored the fact that the Blu-Ray or HD-DVD players DO NOT HANDLE redbook CDs or SACD. There is more to that Denon than just video capabilities.

I'm sure every HD-DVD player can handle every variety of CD, mine does.  SACD is obviously handled by very few available players.  You can keep your old Sony with the bad video to play SACD's and get an HDDVD player to handle everything else, including the high definition video.

No, I didn't think you were serious. But my questions in the opening message WERE serious.  If you had nothing worthwhile to offer in the way of information, why did you post at all?  In THAT sense you ARE a stupid idiot. And only a little maturity as a result of "growing up" will (hopefully) change that for the better.

I prefer the Blu-Ray player to the HD-DVD player. And until such time as Blu-Ray players can handle CDs, SACDs and DVD-Audio, I will NOT purchase such a player. But I do feel that my SONY must soon be replaced, because if the Video function is "sick", how long do you suppose it will be before the  audio functions succumb to the same or similar illness?
And if you think that it is possible to play CDs on a Blu-Ray player, I'm sorry to have to tell you that you are totally and incontrovertibly WRONG.

O common Iago , you have butter on your head. I told you seriously what I thought about the Denon players, and you ignored it.
I don't take you serious anymore.
