Well, till now I haven't been much into Leonhardt as a harpsichordist or organist. So I leave it to others to comment on the recordings on offer. But this seems to me a very nicely programmed set with him as harpsichordist, organist, accompanist and conductor - ideal to explore his art.

I had most of this recordings in LP,and some of them in CD.

Leonhardt is one of my favorite artists. His Bach (WTC, Partitas, English Suites), Froberger, Louis Couperin are the best I ever heard. Even his recordings of Byrd, Sweelinck or Scarlatti are exceptional, although here I prefer other versions.

As conductor, he leaves two monuments: Bach's Mass, in the most spiritual version, and the complete version of the Cantatas (with Harnoncourt).

This is the old Telefunken Das alte Werk Edition (complete recordings from the 1960es), which was released, when he turned seventy.
The new "octogenarian" release includes exclusively recordings released by DHM.

I missed this thread previously. But this looks quite interesting indeed: particularly as I'm not familiar with most of the repertory included, and I always enjoy the chance to expand my listening via a reliable source (as Leonhardt seems to be)!

Yes, doubling the Bach concerto and the triple with Asperen were really foolish choices. I just got the box used (while looking for the Böhm disc) for about 10 EUR and shipping (about twice what the Böhm disc would have been separately) and while rather minimalist I think it was worth the modest price for me as I only had two of the discs included (GBV and Weckmann) and there is enough interesting stuff for me in there at about an EUR/disc. I basically think of it as giving me the Louis Couperin, the Duphly/Rameau/etc. and the Böhm discs and the remainder as a bonus.

I just heard Leonhardt's transcription of the 4th cello suite for the first time, which I think is one of these recordings. I feel rather excited by it.

The bwv 1010 transcription is maybe the most "extreme" performance by Leonhardt that I can recall hearing, extreme in the alignment and independence of the voices and extreme in the sense of the rubato.

One reason I like what Leonhardt does is that it brings out the boldness, the shocking boldness, of the writing. And because it rejects traditional ideas about beauty in a bowed instrument. Maybe Bach was himself rejecting these ideas in the last three suites, that's something Lawrence Dreyfus, John Butt and Peter Wispelway suggest in a discussion.

I think I should revisit his transcriptions of the violin music now,

For the price, this looks like a good bargain for someone like me who only owns a smattering of Leonhardt's recordings.
