Is there no way to view the poll results without having to vote? (before the closing date, of course)

No. Sorry.

Speaking of Sawallisch, if you enjoy his way with the romantics you might also enjoy his Ring on EMI (that is, if you haven't already heard it). Few on this board know about it (though you can ask PerfectWagnerite ;)) but I really think it ranks up there with the best he's done on disc.
Who's the orchestra and singers?  Never mind, I'm sure they played and sang for him like they would for no one else. 8) If I had any money, I'd buy this one sight unseen, or rather "hearing unheard." ;D

Bernstein, Bohm, Furtwangler, Stokowski, Szell.  Tough choice, though...
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Hmmm, seems like a coincidence but I was just listening to the Sawallisch Ring and have it right in front of me right now. Some of the cast include:

Wotan - Robert Hale
Fricka - Marjana Lipovsek
Loge - Robert Tear
Alberich - Ekkehard Wlaschiha
Bruennhilde - Hildegard Behrens
Sieglinde - Julia Varady
Siegmund - Robert Schunk
Hunding - Kurt Moll
Siegfried - Rene Kollo

I really like Robert Hale's youthful sounding Wotan amongst other things. Sawallisch's direction is clear and direct without any idiosyncrasies. The orchestra is the Bavaria State Orchestra which plays with a rounded, smooth, and golden robust tone throughout. You get similar sound in Sawallisch recording of the Bruckner symphonies on Orfeo.

Anyway I like Sawallisch a lot. Almost everything I have by him I really enjoy.

Difficult to choose as there are so many great ones on the list. I was lucky to see Wand's last concert in Britain.  Bruckner's 9th at the Proms.  Best performance I ever heard.

With which orchestra was that?

Anne

Furtwangler
Klemperer
Bernstein
Reiner
Toscanini

Renfield

Toscanini, Fürtwangler, Karajan, Mengelberg and Mravinsky here, although I think that's unfair to at least Stokowski, Bernstein, Klemperer, Bruno Walter and Erich Kleiber.

Also Klaus Tennstedt, who's not even on the list! :o

There, I just gave you my top ten (+1), as well. ;)

I picked Ansermet, Monteux, Munch, Reiner and Solti

You left out one of my favorite deceased conductors from the 20th century: Paul Paray (1886-1979)

Paray? Now there was a great conductor. He worked magic in Detroit, and those Mercury Living Presence LPs (and now SACDs) are proof. I keep waiting for someone to reissue his Wagner record, but the "keep waiting" part is the key to that statement.

Okay, stick to folks who died in the last century.
How about ones you wish had died in the last century?

And if death in the 20th Century is the criterion, why isn't Mahler on the list!?

Barbirolli, Giulini, Klemperer, Kubelik, Szell.  On another day it could be 5 different choices.

I picked Klaus Tennstedt even though he wasn't there. :'(

I am a very big fan of opera and Beethoven so naturally my choices are:

  1) Karajan
  2) Furtwangler
  3) Giulini
  4) Solti
  5) Bohm

  Any complaints??

Why, he's right there at the bottom.

;D

Not sure if any of them will get a second vote. But hey, it's worth a try:

Grzegorz FITELBERG
Witold ROWICKI
Henryk CZYZ (Czyż)

Would I vote for any of them...? I don't know. Let's see if they get any backup at all. Once they're on the list - I might. Or then again... etc.

mahler10th

Thanks Renfield for the petiton...but...

:'( Boo. Now Tennstedt is there and I can't swap him for Kubelik. :'( :'(
:P
