Aye, that remark is rich . . . .

But without her our GMG Essentials list lacks the 1812 Overture....

Has anybody had Youtube issues today? Currently when I load a video the red progress bar shows at 100% right away even though it hasn't fully buffered yet, and in addition to that playing randomly stops and can only be restarted by skipping a second ahead.

That happened when I loaded a HTML 5 video (but not today).

Ah cool, thanks. I guess if it's not just me it'll be fixed eventually.

Teddy Roosevelt became President of the US 109 years ago today, at age 42.

Gosh, That would make him really quite elderly had he still been alive!

Also: The only US President whose term spanned either side of 1900, died in 1901. Something I learnt earlier in the day.

I heard on the radio that Mahler's "Symphony of a thousand" was performed for the first time 100 years ago this week.  I suggest we fly flags at half-staff to observe this day of infamy in music history.

You must have meant that for the 'Joke' thread. I will ask a Mod to move it.

Did I miss the celebrations marking the 99th anniversary of his Symphony of nine-hundred and ninety-nine?

I ocasionally see British posters browsing here during the small hours, but do any of you have actual sleeping problems? If so, have you found any methods to deal with it? (An open question to anyone.)

I've tried a lot of suggestions - avoiding electronic media for an hour before sleeping (so the brain calms down), exercising to tire myself out - but generally they haven't worked.

My sleep pattern is a bit strange these days - I fall asleep fine, then wake some hours later - really wide awake. Sometimes I just give in to it, get up, grab a whisky, and switch on the computer for half an hour. I'm usually able to nod off after that.

But in general - I have no solutions other than reading myself to sleep, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

I don't seem to have a problem, nor am I British ... sometimes my power-down ritual is to play a long, quiet Feldman piece — Triadic Memories or Crippled Symmetries — whose broad pace and 'invitations to silence' will conduce me to sleep.

I'll wake up in the wee hours to pee and then my brain will kick in with story ideas or worries about work.  ;D

I usually drink a big cup of Greek mountain tea about 30 minutes before sleep.
