Now here's a strange thing. As I read that, I felt an instant pang of sadness - that even though I've never met you, we'd shortly be the poorer for your absence.

I'll still be online, of course. But I felt that pang of sadness too, in fact it's more of a permanent throb, because I've grown to love this place. This island and this culture feel like my home, now. Work visas are, from what I hear, preposterously expensive and difficult to obtain, but you can bet that as soon as I get back I'll begin plotting my return to England.

It was an immense pleasure getting to attend several dozen concerts this year and in the process meeting GMGers Papy Oli, Luke, J.Z. Herrenberg, vandermolen, and Dundonnell. :)

True, that. And most artists don't hit their stride until their 50s anyway.

There's a thread in that: artists who continue to mature, versus those who blaze brightly and then fizzle out.

Actually , the notion is giving me strong deja vu. Is there such a thing as too many threads?

BTW, congratulations, paulrbass! I hope you get a nice conductor, and get to play a good variety of pieces.

I met the conductor, she seems nice, though I haven't been to a rehearsal yet (Though, I am used to conductors who aren't the nicest of people while on the podium)

I saw the program for the year, the first concert includes Romanian Rhapsodies 1 and 2 by Enescu.  Mahler 4 is also on the schedule.  (Will be my second time playing it), and another highlight is Mozart's Requiem.    There are other pieces I am forgetting, including modern stuff, but those are the ones that stick out.

Back in Texas. Had some tacos for dinner last night, and this morning my laptop thinks it's 1:30 p.m. I'm too nostalgic to change it back, but I'm not really all that nostalgic, because my parents bought and framed a "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster and put it up in my room. :)

Cool poster! Now all you need is a "mind the gap" somewhere and you are all set!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Brian, glad to hear you're safely home again.

Now, get going: there's work to be done in the Sibelius thread, and important new CDs to be bought!

Haha! There really is no escape, is there? Sorry, Brian. ;D

It's been a productive day at work. Not for my employer, of course! I've just spent eight hours writing a short story, after being inspired by a competition. The "prompt" was "How did I end up here?" Word limit is 1500, which is very limiting. I think I spent most of my writing time just whittling it down to size. A considerable task, considering my original idea was rather epic. Much was improved along the way, of course, but the piece is now very hard-boiled in style, which luckily in this case suits the subject.

My only worry is that I didn't include the actual phrase "How did I end up here?" in the story. Just couldn't bring myself to. It just seemed too trite. I hope they won't hold it against me....

I can't remember if you live in central TX or a bit west Brian, but hope you're not in range of those wildfires...
