I heard one of the saddest stories ever yesterday.

There is a guy that frequents one of the mental institutions nearby who lost his wife and all of his three kids. His wife committed suicide (when is not known, though likely after one or two of the kids died), the first kid died by catching on fire in a gas station, the second kid died from cancer, and the third kid died when she, the dad and some other kids were sitting in a building and a car crashes into the building, killing her and 4 other kids. The last thing the guy said to his daughter was, "Do you want some tea?" So to this day, he carries teacups and a bottle of tea on him and asks people he meets, "Do you want some tea?" I think I just found my new catchphrase.  >:D

Awful!
Yeah, I would almost bet money that guy was perfectly normal before all of that. Actually, I think most people would have killed themselves after all of that (like the wife did), so it's actually admirable that he's even alive and not doing weirder stuff than that (well, if he isn't, idk). There's only so much most people can tolerate until their mind just breaks.

I just have to say that I'm glad to hear my friend doesn't have to pay child support and has equal custody of his son now (will live with his mom 15 days and then his dad 15 days).

Up until now, the last 10 or so years, he's been paying $420/month plus only seeing him one day a week, which is a terrible deal. He delivers Chinese food to make enough money, and even then, it's about a third of his income. If he did my job full-time, it'd be about half of his income. So paying less and seeing him more is a great deal, I'd say, and an even one.

And even the occasional puddle.  (Sorry, couldn't help myself!  But I didn't want to mar that Hello thread . . . .)

Well, if I was a real jerk I'd play the 3rd movement of Thomas Ades' Asyla ;D. You know the part I mean.

It hasn't been nearly as bad as that one time though. I'll talk to them if it gets really loud again rather than having a country music and Mahler contest.
So I decided to talk to them after trying to do homework with a mixture of Messiaen and country music for a couple of hours. Very friendly people -- why didn't I do this earlier?! I don't think they realized how loud it was because they turn the music up so they can hear it while they are on the terrace below me. I introduced myself and made sure that they aren't able to hear my music, either. They said that they couldn't.
Beethoven's Op. 133 -- A fugue so bad that even Beethoven himself called it "Grosse".

Excellent!  It ought to be as easy as just having a neighborly talk, and it is good to hear that it was just that easy.

In watching and reading the press coverage of the march to war in Iraq and Syria, I have noticed that not only government officials, but also the press, has taken to using derivatives of the word "barbarian" in describing ISIS/ISIL/IS (which is it?).  I also can't help but notice how they went from JV, per the prez, to a major national security threat, again per the prez, in such a short time.  It's good to see that some traditions don't change.
