Johan,
She does have a kitchen, but no oven apparently! She is taking over an appartment from a Dutch student, but has a friend staying nearby.

I had been wondering how your daughter was faring on the accommodation front. Good to see she has found something.

Thank you Johan, it has been a long, drawn out process but the website you suggested was v helpful and finally she has found something which seems ok. One problem was that she couldn't "register" at some other places and so couldn't accept them, but hopefully it is sorted ou now. Not that she is worried as she is currently clubbing in Crete (just like her father used to hahaha  :P)

Time to revive my thread for some happy news from the literary front.

As some (or most) of my friends here know, I have been busy finishing a novel. I am not there yet, but one thing has happened last week which is the excellent added incentive to help me over the hurdles that still are looming ahead of me - recognition as a writer from a very influential critic-cum-professor of literature-cum-editor-in-chief of one of the oldest literary magazines in the Dutch-speaking world (to put it grandly), i.e. The Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders). He regards my work as 'astonishing'.

Next month the Editorial Board will convene, consisting of writers, poets and literary scholars, to vote on the inclusion of a chapter from my novel in their magazine. If they vote yes, my breakthrough will be a fact, because with their acceptance comes a whole network.

Wish me luck!  ;)

Do you actually need 'luck'? Surely if the editor-in-chief regards your work as 'astonishing'-obviously in the best possible meaning of that word-his board would be very unlikely to dissent from that opinion?

Natural talent WILL be recognised ;D

But-since I have wished you luck in another place-I now repeat that expression with all possible enthusiasm, my dear friend :) :)

Thanks, Colin! Well, there are 9 people there, and it's a democratic vote... But I'm hopeful!

We shall all keep our fingers crossed for you and look forward to good news next month :)

(Off topic- I hope you have noticed that I have finally got myself an avatar ;D)

Congratulations, Johan! That is wonderful news indeed (and as an occasional writer myself I have a grasp of how incredibly exciting it is) and I wish you the best of luck with the vote of the editorial board. Hope they vote wisely.  :)

I'll be waiting for the English translation  8)

Wow, that's quite an endorsement, even before the board votes on it.

I would love to read some of your work :).

Thank you! Well, as it happens I have translated one story into English, just to make it possible for some of my international friends to get an idea. I'm not the easiest of writers, but the effort is worth it, I think. The story is part of my novel, but can be read on its own:

I have read the "fragment" from his novel and it is indeed great.

Thanks! I've downloaded this - will read when I can give it my full attention. (Doing a lot of half-hearted end of semester admin at the moment).

Hehe, a lot of fragments for me recently. I've been looking a Macpherson/Ossian bits and pieces :D.

I don't think that I have sent you my Directory to the US Senate, 1863-2009 :) It is only 610 pages long ;D ;D

Unpublished, of course! I did submit it to the US Senate Historical Office pointing out that it corrected some inaccuracies on their website :)
I got a polite 'Thank You' :(

:-[  Working too hard, reading too quickly, and typing waay too fast...although I'm sure Colin merits some pat on the back for something.  :-[

Johan, I will look forward to reading your work, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for good news forthcoming.
