This article was pretty convincing

http://www.nytimes.com/1992/01/11/opinion/l-letter-on-mozart-a-german-not-austrian-composer-878092.html

Yes, it is.

Note the following:

Quote from: Raymond EricksonFor him "Germany" was not a sovereign nation (since such did not yet exist), but rather the German-speaking Holy Roman Empire, which was to outlive Mozart by but a few years and included the duchy of Austria (of which he was not a subject, of course).

That convinces me that to call Mozart a "German" today would be anachronistic; today, Germany is a sovereign nation.  Furthermore, since the German-speaking Holy Roman Empire included the duchy of Austria, it would be further misleading to call Mozart a "German," as in our our usage that would suggest some sort of 'renunciation' of Austria.

Is Austria now a sovereign nation? Isn't that just a matter of reinterpreting? I'd personally go with the spirit, instead of the current geographical state. That's like, if Mexico were to conquer LA two years after I die, calling me a Mexican.
I don't think it's a matter of renouncing anything since I don't think Mozart ever did that, so there should be no misunderstanding there.

It is impossible, since United States has controlled the Americas over the past 2 centuries.

Evidently you haven't been to Los Angeles.

California pertains to LatinAmerica's inhabitants of Spaniard background like me. It was founded and built by Spaniard missionaries. We don't like aryans, yellows, browns, blacks and reds there.

It seems the old forum is accessible again. Perhaps we should include links in the index to the various threads?  Not that i'm volunteering to compile... :)

Note: If a message tells you to consider making a new thread due to the age of the existing one, please ignore it.

I don't see what purpose this serves, or even why Lethe should get to make the rule. Some composers' threads sink into obscurity over time, and it makes more sense to open a new thread than to go back and search for the old one.

But now that all those sunken threads have been brought back up, so to speak, by the present thread, no one need search for older ones -- unless they somehow miss this sticky!

Err... this is reflecting the moderators policy of merging similar threads to create meta nodes of relevent information. It seems likely that they would prefer the feature to be removed if the forum software allowed it.

Ouch! Fixed.

Sara deserves a lot of kudos for putting this composer thread together - I did one similar on the old forum (a lot of work to start and to update) - she has done a fine job.  But just a suggestion to who those who start or see composers not on her list - if I add a 'new' composer, I will re-check her index periodically to see if the new thread was added; if not, just a 'gentle' PM w/ the information will always bring a quick response in my experience.  Thanks again, Sara - Dave  :)

Hello Epicous - I see that Sara has this composer already on the list but the link goes to your post here, i.e. just a U-tube video?

Up to you, but my suggestion would be to start a thread on this composer in the 'Composer Forum' - does not have to be long - maybe a brief bio, link to a more extensive bio, a list of his major compositions or genre of works, and possibly some recording suggestions.  Then others can read and reply w/ new posts and that link can be included in the composer listing here.  Dave  :D
