All this for 49 euros or the equivalent.
"I don't know what sforzando means, though it clearly means something."

Oh hell, I didn't read the small print!  >:(

One of my faults, reading the headline, jubilate, plaster links all over the opera world and then end up with egg on my face. Not too bad a damage though, because the egg was tossed by a friend, thank you for using scrambled instead of hard boiled eggs!  :-*

Have a paper towel, Lis?  0:)

uffeviking

Thank you, Spezi! So reassuring to know I can always rely on you for sympathy!  :-*

Parsifal is over and the performance has been praised, kind of, by our absent Wagner cholar. He lead us to Bayreuth's additional source of income: The sale of production photos at € 12.50:

Have any of you followed the spectacle a few months ago when the NY Met had to use four or five Tristans because Ben Heppner had become ill, one ran with his head into the prompter's box because of scenery malfunction? It was Robert Dean Smith who save the performances, and he was the one singing in Bayreuth. Believe me, he is good! A very young, lyrical voice, but strong enough to take him with flying colors through the grueling last act. No weakening, as so often happens to other tenors in this role; if anything, he became stronger, more emotional, including a few of what I call 'catches' in the voice. You call it a sob? Tenors do it in Italian roles; Smith's use of it as Tristan fits perfectly.

You shoulda heard him!  ;D 8)

Lis, I was *at* the Tristan performance when Smith sang--and banged his head.  (It was really scary for a few minutes.)  But the accident aside, I thought he did a very good job, especially on short notice.  Sounds like his triumph at the Met wasn't a fluke, which is great to hear.

Oh, it was he who banged his head; had forgotten who the unfortunate tenor was. Sure didn't do any damage to his vocal cords!  8)

uffeviking

OK, who banged his head?

This one says it was Lehman:

Name: Vincent Vargas, New York, writing in his Wagner Blog.

Many thought that Gary Lehman deserved the HD telecast and radio broadcast, especially after replacing John Mac Master and at the same time getting clunked on the head when he slid down the stage right into the prompter's box.   ???

Oops, sorry, my bad: it *was* Lehman.  Never mind... :-[  (There were so many Tristan's I lost count...)

Well, glad Smith sounds good!  IIRC he was in the movie broadcast.

Gramophone has a review of Meistersinger: a new production by Katharina Wagner, and quite radical.
