Meanwhile, Obama is calling people selfish if they don't like his tax hikes. It's politics. Both sides are guilty, obviously one more than the other this campaign trail. But it's pretty goofy to pick apart a political cartoon. Can you honestly say that every one that jo jo has posted in this thread has been the picture of integrity?

I don't apologize for my political leanings and every time I can blast McCain/Lipstick Pitbull, I'll do it.  Besides, the ones I put in are funny and keep with the message the Repuklican ticket is putting out.

Anyway, the one with Biden is funny.  The 40 year old virgin one is just stupid and makes no sense.

Of course, but nothing the Obama camp has said about the McCain camp has been even remotely extreme as the opposition's various cries of "Socialist," "palling around with terrorists," "hates America," "secret Muslim," etc. etc. etc. The worst thing the left has put out about McCain is that he's a mean, spiteful and duplicitous old man, which should be obvious to anyone who is a decent judge of character that watches him speak.

... but let's let it drop for now. Discussing politics doesn't suit me. :)

It is. You could substitute any loose cannon for Biden, and the joke would still hold.

I vividly recall the 1984 Time cartoon of nominee Reagan pondering over his veep choice. Crawling and crying Bush sr is desperately clutching at Reagan's legs saying "I'll take it ! I'll take it!! " .  During that Republican Party nomination campaign, Bush was strongly critical of Reagan's "voodoo economics".

Political cartoons do have a strong evocational power.

Is there a direct quote of this?

Also, it's one thing to say "it's politics" to suggest that someone's tax policy is destined to create a deficit, it's another to smear someone's good name and family and character.

And, yes, this stinks whether it's happening from McCain (to Obama) or TO McCain (from Bush, in the 2000 primary).

Close to direct, but definitely not a quote mine. IMO, it's a pretty naiive comment.

Now this one is funny.  You want to do a cartoon on Obama, bring this one up.

Meanwhile, Sarah and Nicolas cozy up in this Youtube vid.. Apparently it's been viewed more than a million times. Not funny to this old-fashioned grinch, but apparently it's quite popular. I have to say Palin was quite  okay, but her Secret Service contingent was not amused.

I heard part of a discussion about US politics on Radio 4 today. One topic mentioned was the idea that Bush had dumbed down the political scene. The US contributor felt that he had been elected because the system and the electorate had already been dunbed down and that had it not been in that state, Bush could not have been elected.

I think that really, US politics were dumbed down in the wake of 9/11. I recall at the last election there were lots of Republican scare tactics that there was a real possibility of polling stations being bombed. That whole atmosphere was whipped up to suggest that only the Republicans could defend the nation.

On poling day there was no trouble, nor did I see any subsequent suggestions that plots had been foiled.

And so the broad brush, simplistic, semaphore style of politics carried on.

Why do people who vote for the other candidate have to be dumb?

It's the never-ending question, isn't it?

Because it isn't enough for some that it is merely a difference in policies/ideologies that separate the theoretical left from the theoretical right. Political caricatures become 'the party,' and their followers are seen as cows being led to the slaughterhouse. I've seen this go both ways, and it's kind of unfortunate.

Because the politicization (is that a word?) of life has gone too far. One does not appreciate somebody anymore on her / his moral, intellectual and spiritual qualities or her / his personal achievements or her / his service rendered to the community. It's "us" (the always smart and honest) against "them" (the always dumb and dishonest). If "we" win, then the world's going to turn instantly into Paradise on Earth. If "they" win, it's going to be Hell on Earth. Partisan politics have swallowed everything and the society is extremely polarized. If you take a moderate, centrist ground, then you'll be a Leftist for the Right and a Rightist for the Left. The poison of partisan politics has pervaded all arteries of social and personal life. It's a sad, mad and dangerous situation.
