Listened to the following recordings at work today: I've really been enjoying my Early Music the last few days and have taken steps to broaden my collection of works - theres something about Early Music which resonates strongly with me!. I listened to some String Quartets today too - the Quincy Porter set is growing on me and the Mozart set is a bit of a favourite and has recieved many plays!. Im finishing up todays listening with the Shostakovich preludes and fugues - these are really beautiful I think and are responsible for getting me into Piano Music in general :)

Rerun of a fantastic piece of music, well performed and recorded.

Some stirring music for the morning, being relistened to now:

My favourite words in classical: "Molto vivace"

Yes, I'm shallow.

Finishing up Stanford's Symphony 5 & 6 on the Stanford Symphony set on Chandos. A truly great buy.

I have this set now as long as it was first released on CD. In those times the music was defiled many times over by reviewers and listeners alike. They did not attach much worth to him as a composer. I was rowing against the tide in those days by stating that his music is well worth our time and effort, and that the music is rewarding, and very well written. So I am glad to see many on GMG are having a good time by listening to them.

Well they were the ones missing out. I hate reviews that focus on whether the music is worth my time or not. A bit of a pet peeve. The reviewer's job is to review the performance, not the piece. I don't mind if they say it is lighter or darker or use other descriptive words that give you insight into the piece. It drives me up a wall when they give their judgments on the worthiness of the piece itself. But back to Stanford, I've had this for four years, and I keep getting more. Last year, I picked up two song discs on Hyperion. In addition, I finally got the Revenge/Songs of the Fleet (cool cover too).

Have moved on to some songs on this anthology - All in the April Evening (Laudibus on Hyperion). Beautiful songs and performances, though sound a bit echo'y at times. Still, wonderful stuff.

An enjoyable morning's work - now musick time!

This composer's orchestral music, especially symphonies, are startlingly good - unexpectedly so. I would sooner listen to Goossens than, say, Bliss, at the moment anyway.

I don't know what made me want to listen to this as soon as I came across The Trellis while reading something, as I'm not really a 'song'-person, but there it is.

Not sure which is sadder - that this disc didn't get a second volume to "complete" the set, or that it's out of print and barely known compared to the Naxos ones :( It's atmospheric music, performed lovingly.
