Very good this!

Since Warner bought Finlandia and made its vast catalogue of Finnish music mainly unavailable (where's that massive 100 CD box of Finnish music, boys?), and BIS and Ondine seems to be retreating to safer commercial waters, Alba seems to be our lifesaver.

Not obvious Christmas music but VW's 8th has become tradition since Sara mentioned it some years ago

RVW's Christmas-themed works have been an obvious choice for me (and many people) over the past couple of years, but last year I coupled it with the light-spirited 8th symphony. The result was successful! It was the finale which made me consider it - it sounds so completely festive with its percussion, lightness and exuberance.

Do you know Hogwood's recording with Arleen Auger? If Fricsay still beats that, it must be an amazing recording!

No, I don't know Hogwood's recording. I was talking regarding the versions I heard (since the old version of Zallinger to Harnoncourt).
Fricsay remains my favorite, but I like the versions of Herreweghe and Gardiner. And Cotrubas (with Leppard) was my favorite soprano coloratura in this work.

Outstandingly lovely stuff:

Carl Vine is a composer that deserves lots of love (I know the symphonies and will search out the rest of the discs on ABC classics).

Hogwood tops both IMO. 8)

Talking about Hogwoods Mozart - currently listening to this:

Symphonies no. 39 (K.543) & 40 (K.550).

Since the original issue - with liner notes in other languages than Italian  ;D - is now a bargain, I'd suggest anyone interested to go for it! :)

Another BRO bargain ($14) - 2 disc set of the cello works of:

Shostokovich, Dmitri - Cello Sonatas & Concertos w/ Viviane Spanoghe, Andre de Groote (piano) & Emil Tabakov conducting the Sofia Soloists SO; recordings made over a 25 year span (1984-2009) and re-issued by Talent; not familiar w/ these performers and have not culled my Shosty cello recordings in a while, BUT purchase prompted by two excellent reviews in MusicWeb (HERE1 & HERE2, the latter a 'Recording of the Month') - SO, if you desire to have these cello works in one small convenient 2-CD set, a recommendation! :)

NOTE: 2nd Cello Sonata (DSCH's last work apparently) is an arrangement of the Viola Sonata by Daniel Shafran.

Hope for you that you were the one that snatched up that very last bargain copy...or the one before that... :D

Thanks; but no, I didn't snatch a copy. I'm not in a hurry to get another set of all the symphonies while so many other works wait in an ever-elongating queue to be bought. ;)
