While touring the wilds of west-central Ohio in search of shelter and a winning lottery ticket, I happened to hear WOSU-FM play the opening movement of a Symphony #5 by an Alla Pavlova, whose works are apparently being offered on NAXOS.  It was played by one of the minor league Russian bands.

But for those of you wondering: what might Rachmaninoff or Gliere be composing today, the lady provides an answer.

Is anybody acquainted with her works?

She's been mentioned here quite a lot recently. I'm sure Robert and Harry (and others - don't have the time right now to check who) will tell you more.

Thanks!  I will see what a search brings up!

BBC Radio 3.

I've just bought my first DAB radio, and I'm delighting in the fact that digital broadcasting delivers a static-free sound with very, very infrequent signal drop-outs. FM was good, some say better, but I never liked that background hiss that seemed to pervade every broadcast. Mind you, I've never lived in an area where the FM signal was particularly strong.

Disc Two of Karajan's first recording (on Decca) of Aida.

Splendid!  :D

I expected more famous tunes, but I guess that's Carmen.  :-\

About halfway in. Sweet.

Where'd you pick that one up, that looks interesting?

It was an iTunes download. Classical Net recommended it and I must say I'm pleased with this well-spent $9.99. There is some beautiful piano music here.

Brilliant has a CD of Alkan piano music that's pretty good, but I like the EMI Gemini release (what I've heard of it) better.

I know all her works very well, have to, because I played them innumerous times, so drop me a line if you want to know, what I think about it. Come to think, I am still waiting for Robert's reaction. Its so silent, that I fear the worst! ;D

Well, folks, gotta get back to writing. As I sign out, I start my old turntable and put this excellent vinyl on:
