I have a soft spot for Boccherini -- check out the string quartets on Naxos, or the string quintets with Fabio Biondi, also excellent.

Just got the Naxos string quartets, looking forward to getting home to play 'em!
Hardly any of us expects life to be completely fair; but for Eric, it's personal.

Try his doleful Stabat Mater (my recording is on Harmonia Mundi, coupled with some wonderfully intense quintets) - just a solo soprano and a small group of strings. It's exquisite.

No, really, it is.

Really admire these Waltzes played by Francois, I am by no means a Chopin officionado but the delicacy of his playing is delightful.

Heads Up : Quite a nice buy along with 5 others from the EMI CD/DVD series all for under £3, most under £2....Amazon Marketplace Sellers UK.

CD - Chopin : 14 Waltzes, Sonata No.3
DVD - Ravel : Concerto for the Left Hand

Franck's Symphony (cd) & Falla (dvd) with Giulini, next up.

Not bad. Strong on momentum and rhythm, with some interesting phrasing (especially in waltz episodes) but occasionally short on charm (Chiarrina) and color. Impressive technique. He should record more.

Haffner

Earlier: the Barenboim-conducted Tristan und Isolde at Bayreuth dvd. Act III waht a moving ending!

Hope my recommendation agrees with you!

Right now: Monteverdi: Selva morale e spirituale.

Falla: El Amor brujo (w. Inès Rivadeneira). Turina: La Procesion del Rocio. Canto a Sevilla ((w. Lola Rodriguez de Aragon). Danzas fantasticas. Pedro de Freitas Branco conducting the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid (Orquesta Arbós). 1953, EMI. Extremely stimulating. Very vivid conducting and earthy singing. Tolerable recording, clean and uncongested.

Léon Orthel, Scherzo No.2 per orchestra

Lebrun, Ludwig August (1752-1790) - Oboe Concertos w/ Heinz Holliger & Thomas Furi + Camerata Bern (older recordings from 1979-82) - excellent 2-CD set (bonus of a Mozart Oboe Concerto); Lebrun was a virtuoso oboist from Mannheim (was in the orchestra as a teen!), and a contemporary & friend of Mozart (and very similar dates, dying just a year apart).  Holliger, as usual, is outstanding, the band really together & up front, and the recording superb - and all for about $10 (+$3 S/H) from the Amazon Marketplace!

Actually, found this set in searching for another - a great recommendation in a recent issue of Fanfare (pic below, right, w/ Indermuhle) - review reprinted on the ArkivMusic Site - the reviewer seemed to prefer the Holliger recordings and at a third the price, I did too!  :D
