Hey Jay. 8)

Last one before I go take a nap.

Not the best recording out there but certainly very enjoyable.

I bought the CD with the same work by the LSO and Colin Davis but have yet to listen to it ...

I am not familiar with this performance, but Davis is very good in Elgar and then you have LSO, so it should be fine.

This is a great symphony and it deserves to be known better. Especially the third movement, which is among the most beautiful pieces of music that Elgar ever wrote.

Hello, Voice of Mog! 8) Where've you been? ???

Well, erm, i'm embarrassed to say... I went through a Jazz-Funk stage.  :-[  In hindsight I think I overdosed on Sibelius, and I needed one hell of a funky antidote for it.  ;)

PC 1 and 4 from this exquisite set. Does it continue with the same high standard it could be my favourite complete set of Beethoven PC's. And it's perfect to have Czech PO as the pairing orchestra!

I'd urge you to hear the Zinman/Bronfman pairing on Arte Nova (now Sony) for the third and fourth concerti. I'd give these the edge over Sherman's takes.

It's actually a rather fine performance, perhaps narrowly put into the shade by this one:

No idea... If anyone knows, it's you! ;D
Maybe some in the GPOC series?

Q

Can you give me the details of what's there, including the dates and locations? I'll gladly do the leg work.

I have it, but haven't played it in a while. It contains the best performance of the Sixth Symphony I've ever heard.

The two reviews on Amazon really trashed this set.  I have always liked Colin Davis and own many of his recordings on both CD and LP ...

Those are damning reviews. But then, the mention of the Kegel set sounds alarm bells for me - I was left pretty unmoved by those performances.

Believe me, I was a bit skeptical of the first review.  I have heard of Kegel but do not feel there is any compelling reason to own any of his recordings.  I already have the Harnoncourt's Beethoven Symphonies on order with MDT (the WarnerMusic box set that also includes a bunch of other works) and wish to get another 2-3 Beethoven cycles before calling it quit and the Colin Davis' set has been on my mind.  It is a pity so few people know much about this set ...

Hey, Russell. It's Jay here.
Hi Jay, I read your note about your username over here back at sh.tv, but I would have recognised you by your avatar anyway  :)

That Rattle M8 you were playing must be from the same cycle as the M9 I have on the way.  How do you like it?

I was browsing eMusic this morning, wondering what to use my credits on, when I stumbled across this. I took one look at the cover and a quick look at the credits before deciding I just had to have it! I'm coming towards the end of Lou Harrison's 2nd Symphony as I type. I am impressed. Enough to check him out further.

Schoenberg quartets with Lasalle on the new Brilliance reissue, and the remarkable record of Lily Boulanger's music on Timpani.

I have been anxiously awaiting that Schoenberg/Lasalle. How do you like it???

Felice Giardini (1716-1796) - String Trios w/ Budapest String Trio; 3-CD set - these are forgotten but wonderfully composed and performed compositions from the 18th century; a 10/10 rating from Hurwitz reproduced HERE on Arkiv Music, wanting $60 for this package - however, I picked it up a while back from BRO for just $21 (and still listed there - check the link) - highly recommended, esp. if purchased from the latter site -  ;D
