Aye, that definitely doesn't sound like Taneyev to me?  :o

I stuck it out and it proved to be a decent performance. The nails down the chalkboard was in the opening movement, could have been the tuning or the sound, who knows?

...via Rhapsody... Liking it a lot. If I can find all the volumes in a single set, I'd buy it.

Ever revisited a recording, one which you haven't heard perhaps for years.  Then realized that it was every bit as good then as it is now?

Today it was, Dutoit and it was as good as ever.  One recording I can not fault.

Welcome back, Mr TT!  :)

Listening to Brigitte Engerer's take on Op. 9 Nocturnes by Chopin, thinking of my girlfriend in Warsaw.  And next Opp. 15, 27, 32.  This is a really good set, IMO, available on the cheap at Berkshire.  On first listen, I think I prefer it to Garrick Ohlsson's lauded second Nocturnes traversal on Arabesque, although Ohlsson is one of my favorites.  Engerer is less deliberate, more fluid (jeu perle?), but with a firm grasp of rubato.  A dynamic and well-considered set, and as a self-proclaimed audiophile I couldn't ask for better sound.

George Crumb's Black Angels for string quartet.

Lucky as I am, I have three versions of this work; tonight it's  the Concord Quartet ...

Just recently discovered Jordi Savall, what a virtuoso and what an ensemble he leads.  Alia Vox was an unknown label to me until a month ago when I started browsing through the MDT website.  I will probably pick up another half dozen SACD's by Savall and his ensemble.

Now playing ...

And the Art of Fugue CD artwork is my avatar.  BTW, it is an excellent CD and one of my ten versions of this work ...

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

I have this recording on both CD and LP.  I love the opening movement, it sounds serious and dramatic, as it should be for such work ...

Stuart - glad that you've 'discovered' Jordi Savall - I first heard him personally at a local concert probably back in the 1980s, and have been buying his recordings periodically since then - my most recent purchase on his Alia Vox label is Handel's music as shown - I feel that these are just exuberant & dynamic recordings , quite difference from other versions that I own - he seems to be always a pleasure - Dave

His Handel's Royal Fireworks and Water Music combo is on its way with my latest order from MDT.  It should be the most recent recording of this work, as all my other versions are probably 20 years old or older ...

I bought a pristine vinyl copy of Couperin's Concerts Royaux on the Arkiv label two days ago, recorded by Christiane Jaccottet, Christine Nicolet, Heinz Holliger, Thomas Brandis, Josef Ulsamer, Manfred Sax, and Aurèle Nicolet in the mid-1970's.  Stellar performances, and on perfectly-pressed and plated German vinyl, mastered by Willem Makee.  I would like to hear Savall's version, though.  He is good.  I bet the SACD sound is sumptuous.

I love the Carlos 5 disc (the Morales excerpts on that are truly exceptional), the Holborne and Lawes consort discs and the Lully Roi de Soleil. In what is truly an exceptional catalogue (not that I have heard all!) these are clear highlights for me. The Todos Humanos disc is also essential for lovers of Spanish Renaissance song.

Savall's recorded my favourite LvB 3 (on Auvidis Astrée). Not in print now, though.

Listening to some Krommer Harmonienmusik. A reaction to Gurn's superlative "classical" thread. Thanks!

I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.
