I for one feel Dutoit definitely over-recorded, but this recording of Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet is dynamite. Everything is right here, Montreal SO's sound is flawless, the engineering is well-balanced (full-sounding bass), and the contrast of playful and tragedy is focused. Not discounting other R&J recordings, but this has been one of favorite recordings for a long time.
Always a joy to re-visit this great Prokofiev piece.

Nice, Greg! One might wish only that they'd recorded the entire ballet.

I hope you are enjoying this one, Coco. I was a bit rough with this particular recording, but Pierlot and his people are one of my very favorite Baroque ensembles.  :)

Definitely. I'm new to the work but I'm enjoying the intimate forces, the varied instrumentation and the wonderful soloists — particularly the alto.

Great! Yes, Carlos Mena sings better every day and the Ricercar Consort is beyond any reproach. I also particularly love the voice of Maria Keohane.

Not a complete recording of the keyboard concertos as stated on the cover, but highly enjoyable performances. This second disc probably includes some of the best Bach recorded by Schiff, who is excellently accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Not totally sure why, but I'm having an Inger Dam-Jensen night. It's not even her birthday. Just wanted to hear a voice that rings high, bright, and clear.

Very beautiful but I was expecting even better. I must listen to this two CD again.

The last CD of this box. Five times did I play it, all five of them, and with regret I will put it in my collection. So many others are waiting to be played. The journey has been beautiful, this series remain a absolute high light, in Brilliant's releases. The performances are immaculate, not a blemish anywhere! Sound is perfect too.

Sorry Harry. Don't you know the rules? You can't stop at 5. You could have stopped at 4, but you kept going, so now you're stuck. You'll just have to listen to it again!  ;D :P

That is quite a conundrum indeed.  :) Then again, there is no rule as to WHEN to listen to it again... And 800 is quite a backlog! I find it hard to listen to too many new pieces in the same day. If I like a new piece, I like to let the feeling linger. I don't know how you do it!

From this box, CD 5. By all means it is a wonderful set too, and I regret that I come to it very seldom, albeit its the second time I play it, and will finish it this year completely, or so I hope.

I tend to play new works 3 or 4 times and let it rest for a while, then start afresh, but I simply love playing unknown works all the time. The thrill of discovery is exhilarating for me.

Leo Delibes & Leon Minkus.

La Source.

Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Richard Bonynge.

I have something with boxes today, and this is one I neglected for a long time too, and that is not deserved, for it contains the most wonderful ballet music ever written. I name it first when it comes to my likes of classical music. But that's also because I am connected to the ballet in a more than professional way, also privately I am pretty mixed up with this world. I know and feel the world in which it all takes place, with closed eyes this world comes out from the clouds of remembrance.
Anyway "La Source" is a wonderful ballet, which gets a beautiful treatment in the hands of the very able Richard Bonynge. This box will never be surpassed in its sheer involvement. Yummy music. Last night I saw the Bluray version of the famous ballet movie "The Red Shoes", which prompted me I guess to listen to this box again.

Yes - some great performances in that set. Glad you are enjoying them. You planted the idea of ballet in my head, so I dug out this disc, which I don;t listen to as much as I could. I bought it for the Saint-Saens, which is what I am listening to now.
