From start to finish, a wonderful recording.

MI, that's a great CD - especially my favorite Karlowicz work, the 'Episode at a Masquerade.'

Now watching this Aug. 24 concert from the Annecy Classic Festival on medici.tv:

Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra
Valery Gergiev, conductor
Gautier Capuçon, cello
Denis Matsuev, piano
Timur Martinov, trumpet

Tchaikovsky: Serenade for Strings
Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme
Liszt: Piano Concerto No. 1
Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No. 1
Shchedrin: Humoresque (Matsuev's encore)

Edit: Not sure why they only did movements 2 and 3 of the Shostakovich.  >:( The first movement isn't that long and the last two were splendid, followed by a lengthy ovation.

Oh man, the last 45 seconds of the "pastorale" movement are hilarious.

Was going to start a Bruckner marathon, but I postponed it for some Pettersson:

All of the Riisager recordings on Dacapo are worth owning. Great music. I read somebody who referred to him as a Danish Ravel. I don't know about that, but the music is well-crafted this I do know.

Just heard:
[asin]B000TKODEK[/asin]
Listened to it once before a couple of years ago, but passed on buying it.  Gave it another go after seeing Jens's high praise for it and then hearing a smashing Haitink/Schäfer/RCO live performance here http://player.omroep.nl/?aflID=9068963

The orchestra is great, natch, and Schäfer's the bee's knees, but Haitink's direction is too bloodless, too smooth and soft and pretty for my preferences.

I don't have that recording, in fact it's Neeme Jarvi with Gothenburg SO, but I've always enjoyed Part's Symphony No.3

Oh, you should definitely acquire this recording, Greg. Sublime performances from start to finish. The performance of Cantus in Memoriam of Benjamin Britten will make the hairs on your neck stand up.

A winning disc all-around. These are charming works. They may not have the pensiveness of the Cello Concerto or Symphony No. 2, but this is an enjoyable disc.

How's that playing stack up? Hagai Shaham's big bold brand of violin-playing is much appreciated over here. :)

I can't imagine better. It's a vivid and committed recording in ideal sound. It's the only disc I have heard that couples these works all together, and I might imagine that some could wish for a more strident take (or perhaps more svelte) but I don't. The duo hit a sweet spot in which the vibrancy of the performances doesn't become overbearing, and there is also so much nuance - it makes the works sound bigger than they are.
