Aulis Sallinen: Complete Works for String Orchestra

Hector

Good afternoon on this last day of August when, 10 years ago, Princess Diana, the peoples princess, so tragically died on the Paris Metro.

It is not often that one gets to witness mass hysteria but I had that privilege in London 10 years ago.

Since then, of course, many monuments have been erected in her memory. A whole swathe of luxury housing was removed to create the artistic water feature that is Kensington Gardens, for example.

In her memory I have totally ignored the music that she loved, Elton John (love him, loathe his music!), and opted for an afternoon of Saint-Saens. A composer that I doubt, in her short sweet life, she ever knew.

The 'cello concertos on Naxos, an underrated disc, and the only ballet he wrote, Javotte from Australia on Marco Polo. All downloaded to iPod.

RIP, Di, baby!

A pity about the late Princess of Wales, of course.

But it is unseemly, nay, disgusting that the world acts as though it's the most important thing in English life since Magna Carta.

Quite. The infinitely more deserving soul of Mother Theresa left this earth the week after Princess Di? Where is her monument? She lived among the sick and the needy, whereas Di merely patronised charities aimed at supporting them (and scored photo opportunities into the bargain). Both worthy causes, but I know for whom I have the greater and deeper respect.

Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (1772-1806) - Trio Op. 3 & Quartet Op. 6 w/ the always wonderful Trio Parnassus; the more I buy of this group, the more I want!  This disc is labelled Vol. 2, so must look for Vol. 1; plus, the violinist, Yamei Yu, is quite a 'looker'!  BTW, Dussek was the Prince's teacher - Louis Ferdinand composes in an early Romantic style (might be considered one of the first Romantics according to the liner notes); unfortunately, perished young & heroically in battle -  :'(

Max Bruch - String Quartets, Nos. 1 & 2 w/ the Mannheimer Streichquartett; also own this composer's Octet & Quintets on the same CPO label - another recommendation; again, both of these CDs have appeared in this thread -  :)

A powerful work, deserving a stronger performance than it gets here.

a masterwork & one of my big contemporary favorites...

Every thing you listen to is "one of your favorites."

I'm listening to John Field - Nocturnes (O'Connor)

Oh, for future reference, anything you have to say to me can be said here instead of in a PM. Thanks.
