Brahms Symphony No. 1 performed by Van Beinum/KCO. Compared to his performance of the same symphony from 1958 this one has more forward-momentum, thrust and energy, but the sound is not as good. I still think I prefer this older account.

Good morning/day to all!

Looks very interesting!
In terms of repertoire, but I also gather that this is a HIP performance.
Thanks for posting it.  :)

Bellini: Norma.
Callas, del Monaco etc., Serafin conducting. RAI live recording from '54. Mono. On a far from flat LP. Superb.

I didn't know that version. I have the version live (7/12/1955) in the Scala, with Callas and Del Monaco (and Simionato) but the conductor is Antonino Votto.

Callas and Del Monaco are extraordinary, in special in the last scenes. How is the sound of that version of 1954?

On which label is that recording, Val?

The label is DANTE (LYS). Technically is very good for a recording of 1946. The presentation is superb and in 3 CD you can have one of the best versions of Khovantchina, of several of Mussorgsky's songs and discover the great singers of the Kirov in the first half of the century.

I may have gone too far in the ad. ;D I'll post the links and explain the downsides as I go:

The Seasons:

(first 3 movements are fine; there's a glitch near the end of the 4th mvt)

You do get another take of "Winter" though (the encore) - glitchless again:

Then there's Grand Tango BUT it also has a glitch towards the end ::):

What do I mean by glitch? The sound is fine but a portion of the music is missing - it just suddenly "jumps forward" a couple of seconds (30-60, I suppose - but am not sure).

The Milonga is the only one free from those. Though it does have a very slight "jump" in one place - I'm sure it's not more than half a second, perhaps a second, and you won't notice it unless you listen hard - it sounds more as if the cellist and orchestra sort of shortened a beat...

The performers:
Jarosław Żołnierczyk, violin
Andrzej Bauer, cello
"Amadeus" - Chamber Orchestra of the Polish Radio
Agnieszka Duczmal, conductor

It's amazing how high the standard of playing is. Enjoyed it and will continue to enjoy it more often. Thankyou so much!

You're welcome! 8) Andrzej Bauer is one of the best cellists in Poland today. And Amadeus under Duczmal is THE best chamber orchestra. But I have to admit this was the first time I ever heard of Jarosław Żołnierczyk... apparently he's just won a competition but don't remember which. ;D

performed by

Edward van Beinum - London Philharmonic Orchestra

I have not really listened much to this overture before, but I can recognize some of the nice tunes. Which are supposed to be the strongest performances of this work?

Mahler 9 (BPO/Abbado, aircheck). Unlike the 6th I listened to last night, this one just didn't connect with me.
