This music is really well played and recorded, more than a match to the Naxos recordings, actually much better.

Herzogenberg's Symphonies 1 and 2 played by the NDR band under Frank Beermann on CPO.

I think that if this had been a pound or £1.50 dearer I would not have bought it.

This is reasonably tuneful stuff in a Brahmsian way but the problem with second-raters like this is that they have no idea when to stop.

Also, if you wish confirmation as to how great dear old Johannes was, buy this!

Harry

I rather like this music very much, and it is well performed.

Another cd, that gave me pleasure, not in the least because this is really a good performance, but also a topnotch recording.
The music is light on the feet, but o so melodious, and well....Rossini I guess.

I saw Batiashvili play the Sibelius last year. Stunning fiddling, and she makes a really beautiful, beatiful sound which is nicely captured on this recording. Unfortunately she's balanced too closely for my taste. At the beginning of the first movement the orchestra is very recessed, almost inaudible. I prefer soloist and orchestra to be equal partners.

Sarge

Edit: on further listening: the problem isn't the recording balance. The problem seems to be the conductor, Oramo, who has his orchestra play way too quietly during some passages.

What's the Lindberg Concerto like, Sarge?

Haven't heard it yet, Karl. The Sibelius keeps drawing me back to the repeat button.

Bill, how is Harnoncourt's way with Dvorak? The matching is certainly intriguing!

Sergeant Rock

Inspired by Marvin's Schubert 4 thread: Mozart Symphony No.4 in D major, K.19.

I have a Naxos release by Ondrej Lenárd and the Slovak RSO (1993) - this beats it hands down.
