George,  Do you still consider Kovacevich outclassed by Gulda and Fischer when it comes to Beethoven piano works?

Sipping tea at the Chengdu International Airport Internet Bar while listening to:

Shostakovich Symphony #5 (Maazel, Cleveland)

Next up:
Operatic Arias and songs (Victoria De Los Angeles)
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Herreweghe's performance of the Mozart Requiem.  I have not read the notes on this recording, but I can tell you the choruses are much smaller than other recordings.  Excellent solo vocals...the mix and sound is excellent, but the solos are a little too up front for my liking.  It certainly won't be replacing the Bohm recording...but it is a nice, more briskly paced alternative thats not as extreme and disaffected as Gardiner's.  Also more sublime as opposed to the terrifying Bohm.  I have a reissue, but this cover looks cooler.

Once again enjoying Ives' Symphony No. 2/NY Philharmonic, Bernstein

Bach Partita #2 for solo violin.  One of the most riveting Bach pieces, comparable to the Goldbergs in power if you ask me.

This looks like an excellent CD-set.  I have the original LP's.

Yes, it is really good, although I don't have many other points of reference for the partitas.  This is a reissue of a more common CD on the Philips label that apparently is from an old recording.  I do vinyl too, but I have no classical LPs.  They are all rock records on audiophile labels.  Too bad I sort of outgrew that music  :'(.  I do prefer the sound of vinyl, but I have found that digital really has its advantages when it comes to size and ease of access.  I've got a few hundred GB of classical music on my hard drive that I can access at the click of a button.

I particulary love the 5th movement of the 2nd Partita, the "chaconne".  It is one of the best examples of theme and variation that I know of.

Now listening to the 2nd movement of the Bach Cello Suite No.1.  I never realized this before, but it almost sounds like the 1st movement played backwards  ;D

I have a few thousand classical LP's, though I really have not played them that often.  CD's are still far more convenient to play ...

Not sure if I want to get this set.  I already have the Bach Cello Suites by Rostropovich ...

It sure is a lot to explore...thats the problem with box sets.  The Bach suites are about the only pieces I am familiar with on the set.  I believe they are the same recording as the ones on the 2-disc Cello Suites that you have.

No doubt.  Rostropovich only recorded this work once with EMI ...

Symphony No.5, Finale

Every note is crystal clear, every component fits into each other like a jigsaw puzzle.

I have been thinking about getting that one myself.  :-\

The Partitas from this ridiculously cheap set from amazon.ge. Really outstanding.

Picked up my recent order at jpc from the post office yesterday. I feel like a kid in a candy shop. ;D

First spin of this. Sounds absolutely delicious - in Early Music this is my first venture accross the Channel to the realm of Albion.

One day I had no music by Thomas Tallis, and now - in the blink of an eye - I have his complete works. :o These are strange times... ::)

Then you should go for the two cheap doubles by the Tallis Scholas on Gimell called Tudor Church Music 1 & 2. I find them even better than this fine Tallis set.
