That one's a gem.

I had an old copy for a long time and recently found Book one (orginal edition) new in a used store, then a few days later grabbed the Images and Children's Corner, so I had to then grab a Book Two from amazon. Had it in under a week.

Great stuff for sure! Debussy with a clean shave. I love the cover too.  :)

I never really warmed to Ashkenazy/Previn's Prokofiev set. The sound they produce is too dense, which I think suffocates the music. It's great for the heady romanticism of Rachmaninov, and I love the pairing in those concertos, but Prokofiev deserves a leaner, [meaner!] sound. I like this set:

Benji - I've had that Ashkenazy set for years - can't say that I love it but stopped looking and have not heard other options - so my interest is peeked!  :D

So, looked briefly on Amazon just to see what other sets might be of interest - inserted a couple above in your quote that seemed to be well recommended; would appreciate any comments from all who might have heard these recordings - thanks!  :)

Absolutely stunning sound...hard to believe such high-definition can be possibly stored on a CD. The interpretation is extremely lifelike and charming...the dark sonorities of the legendary RCO needs to be heard to be believed.

$900? Mine is $20000, insulated coathangers for speaker cables included.

In defence of the approx $8K replacement value of my system:  http://i.gizmodo.com/5213042/why-we-need-audiophiles?skyline=true&s=x  (that's quite an interesting read actually).

Now playing CD2 of this 2-CD set that just arrived two days ago.  Goldberg Variations that lasts almost 88 minutes is kind of long and this is the only version of my 10+ versions of Goldbergs that spans two discs ...

Beethoven sonatas, John O'Conor vol 1.  So far, so good :)
The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

-- William Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Diletante

I'm listening to Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition (orch. Ravel).

Orgullosamente diletante.

First spin. First impression: excellent! :)

Stereo Vegh?
The one on naïve with the magnificent cover picture. I don't care if the two channels are the same or different. Shall find out.
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

This is Parmigianino in sound; mannerism at its best!
HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!

A celection of Dvorak Cypresses.

So much for the idea of selling off half my amps and speakers.

Sudbin's is the only recording of the Tchaikowsky 1 I can stomach. But it is very good.
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.
