Now playing this CD, which just arrived today.  There is nothing wrong with listening to Christmas music early.  I was able to get this semi-OOP CD for a song ...

A little bit of Shosty for me as well, Dave!

A good foil to the Studies in Impermanence, Bill!

Good morning all!

Another Early Baroque cd from the composers Johann Kaspar Kerll  & Johann Heinrich Schmelzer. This K617 recording is not to be missed if you like that period. You will not likely find better performances as on this disc, which is also beautifully recorded. The level of music making is beyond what I expected, and the commitment to my ears fabulous. The Historic Silbermann Organ in Saint Quirin is a dream to hear, and in Freddie Eichelberger you'll find a perfect accompanist, that is aided by Odile Edouard, on the Violon. It will not disappoint, and for the price its a absolute bargain.

7,99 euro's at JPCde.

BEETHOVEN:        Piano Sonata n. 4 opus 7

- Wilhelm Kempff (1951)

- Friedrich Gulda

My favorite version of this beautiful Sonata, is the one that Kempff recorded in 1951. It is the most natural and fluent that I ever heard. It culminates in the Largo and the Finale, Rondo.

Gulda is very different, based on the dynamic, with a great perfection of the articulation. His version of the Largo expresses a very touching emotion, a meditation as deep as Kempff in his version. But the final Rondo is too fast, without the elegance and sense of the contrasts of Kempff.

There are versions with some good moments (Backhaus, Schnabel, Michelangeli) but they are far from the quality of Kempff or even Gulda.

I wish we had a shop in Groningen where I would find all these fantastic bargains you seem to find.
Let me know what you think of this one. :)

Now playing this CD - Quinto Libro di Madrigali by Gesualdo on Glossa, the label Q has been raving about.

Just in case you run out: a shortlist of favourite small "connaisseur" labels - in random order.

Those are not small; they are MAJOR contributors to my collecting addiction.

I already have a good number of recordings on Alia Vox and a growing number of titles on Glossa.  I have not tried the remaining labels you mentioned, though I have browsed their offerings at MDT.  It all comes down to the works the labels have to offer.  I do not care for the so called "modern" classical music, pieces composed in the latter part of the 20th century.  Labels that emphasize that genre of music clearly will not get my business.

I have close to a dozen of Glossa CD's on back order at MDT, what a bummer?

Now playing CD4 and the last CD from this set.  All in all, it is a pretty delightful set, though I would not say the performance surpasses that of the much older recordings by the English Concert and Trevor Pinnock.

Q

Absolutely.  Few of the major labels would have recorded works by Dufay, Gesualdo and Boismortier, etc.  I found them on Glossa.

The new erato

Not to mention my favorite Venturini on Zig-Zag, or Homilius on Carus. Would like to add the Fuga Libera label as well, they have done a Fasch disc that is one of my favourites for orchestral baroque music.

Mahler 6th - Mitropoulos.

What a coincidence, I just started listening to Mahler's 6th as well. :)
