Four complete spins today.  Possibly the Mahler breakthrough I have been hoping for.

Bill, does this version by HvK make the Mahler tough nut any easier to crack?     ;D

Now playing CD1 from this set, which arrived yesterday.  It is a very interesting recording with the tried and true Peter Schreier at the baton.  Beautiful singing with excellent orchestral performance even if it is non-HIP ...

Here is the cast.

Lucia Popp - soprano
Carolyn Watkinson – alto
Eberhard Buchner - tenor
Siegfried Lorenz - baritone
Theo Adam - bass

Leipzig Radio Chorus
New Bach Collegium Musicum Leipzig

Brian

My roommate and I are catching some studying-with-Ludwig time.

BEETHOVEN | Symphony No 3
Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique
John Eliot Gardiner

This is my 5th listen to Eroica in the last 24 hours ... (the first 4 listens were all Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Thomas Dausgaard).

Brian

BEETHOVEN | Piano Concerto No 4
Boris Berezovsky, piano
Swedish Chamber Orchestra Orebro
Thomas Dausgaard

Simax needs to finish this complete Beethoven orchestral music series as fast as it can, and then issue the whole shabang in a box set. I would willingly starve myself for a month to gather enough spare change to buy that set ... the level of excellence throughout this series is just beyond belief.

JANACEK | Sinfonietta
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
Karel Ancerl

Far and away the most-played piece of music in my iTunes library. I listen to the Ancerl Sinfonietta approximately once every two weeks (it's been 15 days), so by December 17 this recording will have been listened to twice as many times as my second-most-played track.  8)

Perfectly right; I really ought to load that baby in.

Thanks for the Mahler listening encouragement gents.  I tried Lenny's 7th today, but was not able to give it the attention I should have.  That will have to wait until next Wednesday when multiple, uninterrupted spins can take place.  Therefore I am returning to the 9th below tomorrow as it is calling me during most of my waking moments.

PS
Ray, I added your Mahlerite below my avatar.  I will try to live up to this honor. ;D

They are currenly giving away the Vanska/Minnesota cycle on BIS, 5 hybrid SACDs at around 19£ on mdt. The single disc I have (which includes nr 8 ) have impressed me greatly, at this price I'll go for the complete package whether I need another Beethoven cycle or not.

Glad you like it, Bill. That is one helluva performance. I hope it does lead to a general Mahler breakthrough but if not, well, you'll always have M9  :)

Janáček Sinfonietta, Szell and his Clevelanders, a performance I've lived with and loved since I was 17.

;D  Nice!  Don't worry about the 7th, I'm still not really keen on that one yet.  :)
