How do you like the Barenboim's Beethoven PS's on EMI?

CD7 Chopin Complete Works

Cor de Groot (July 7, 1914 — May 26, 1993) was a renowned Dutch pianist and composer.

He was born in Amsterdam. He studied piano with Egbert Veen and Ulferts Schults, and composition and conducting under Sem Dresden. In 1932 he graduated with highest honours, playing a piano concerto written by himself. After becoming a soloist with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, he won the first prize at an international contest for pianists in Vienna. He played all over the world and his recordings are often considered as musical "treasures". He was a member of the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition's jury in 1956.

In 1959 a nervous disorder developed in his right hand but he continued playing repertoire for the left hand. He arranged more than 80 pieces for the left hand. Slowly he regained power over his right hand. He became musical director of the Dutch Broadcasting Foundation and promoted Dutch contemporary music. He made many recordings but also continued composing. His compositions include music for piano solo such as Variations imaginaires (1967); orchestral music; vocal work; and chamber music such as Sonatine pastorale for oboe and piano (1961). He died in Amsterdam in 1993.

Just finished playing CD2 from this set.  Great performance from the NYPO during its golden age under the direction of Bernstein ...

Schumann Cello Concerto in A Minor

Not sure who the conductor is, because there is more than one Schumann concerto in this set.

Really like this concerto.  The first movement is really beautiful.

Earl Wild - Transcriptions - a Grammy winner in the 1990s!  Most of the transcriptions by Wild, and a number of 'famous' ones by others (well described in the liner notes) - this is just a wonderful recording - I don't buy many of these type of discs but this one is certainly worth a listen -  :D

I need to hear that work. I do not have a performance of that one yet. In fact, I didn't even know it existed.

I plan to get all his Ivory Classics CD's at BRO.  He was a terrific pianist IMO ...

I have the Schumann Cello Concerto by Jacqueline Du Pre and Daniel Barenboim.  I also have a version by Misha Maisky and Martha Argerich ...

Argerich conducted?

Argerich conducted?

I believe the Schumann Cello Concerto must have a piano part to it because according to my CD listing on Excel, one version has Barenboim and Du Pre while the other version has Maisky and Argerich - a cellist and a pianist ...

Now playing CD2 from this set.  The set is a very pleasant surprise.  Soprano Susan Hamilton has such a sweet voice and she reminds me of the young Margaret Marshall who also sang soprano in Gardiner's 1983 Handel Messiah ...

This is the first Handel Messiah out of over 20 versions in my collection that was performed by a Scottish ensemble.  I also do not have one single version performed by any American ensemble.

My only version features Truls Mork with Vonk and the Koln RSO.

Any suggestions about Schumann's Violin Concerto?  The only version of that I have features Joshua Bell; wondering who else has recorded it.

I like them a lot and they are a current favourite - It did take me a while to warm to the set though, this was due to the PS's being new works to me (and being inexperienced listening to Instrumental/Chamber works) and due to Barenboims heavy playing style during louder moments (that said the Slow movements are very soft and slow!).
I also own Brendels Digital PS set on Decca which I like too, though I have played through the Barenboim set many more times now :).

np:
Schubert: Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 114, D 667, "Trout"

I debated a few months ago as to whether I should pick up this set and decided against it at the time.  After all, I already have the (3) sets by Kempff, Gilels, Gulda, Schnabel, (Annie) Fischer, (Yves) Nat and Backhaus.  I like Barenboim much more as a pianist than as a conductor.  But his me-too Bach WTC turns out to be a major dud ...

The Schumann cello concerto has been played during a couple of recent seasons, and if there had been a piano in the orchestra it might have made the waits seem shorter.
There's no indication in the score.

Note from Mods....

We have noticed that quite a chunk of this thread has been deleted. This is not due to any action the Mods. have taken. Normally, individuals can delete their own posts; but not those belonging to anyone else. This happened with this thread in January, it was only a few posts, but we assumed it coincidence that several people had deleted posts at roughly the same time. However, on this occasion, we can see from the page count that over 20 pages have disappeared. Not all the posts belong to one poster.

We have asked Rob to again check the software out.

Can anyone tell us if they have been deleting their old posts? Not a problem, but we are trying to solve the mystery. If you prefer to PM us, fine, as it seems that multiple posters' posts have disappeared.

I am speculating whether the length of this thread is causing the software a problem. It might be that we need to trim it to preserve the more recent content.
