SCHUMANN:   Romanzen opus 94, Fantasiestücke opus 73, Märchenbielder opus 113, Marchenerzählungen opus 132

/ Ingo Goritzki, Friedli, Fukai, Requejo  (CLAVES)

A very beautiful CD with one of the most deeply inspired works of Schumann, the sublime Märchenbielder for viola and piano. The Romanzen for oboe/piano and the Fantasiestücke for clarinet/piano, with their melodic beauty and their lyricism are also splendid works. The opus 132 is not at the same level, but has some beautiful moments.

A good interpretation in special by Hirofumo Fukai (viola).

All this talk about Puiccini and La Rondine - well, this is a great way to begin a Friday! Fantastic stuff!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Listened to Mendelssohn, Opus 80, the Cherubini Quartet recording.  Not hugely impressed, but the performance seems tame to me.   Maybe it's worth springing for one of the Leipzig quartet recordings to see if it will be the key to unlock this particular door for me.

I assume you read this last night:

A clearer acoustic and keener separation of voices, like that of the Henschel or Talich Quartets, makes the fast movements more detailed; the very atmospheric, rich sound of the MDG recording tends towards mild muddiness on anything except very good, very detailed speakers...

He's right. Through my Canton Ventos in my main listening room the recording sounds spectacular. But last night, listening to "mid-fi" speakers attached to my computer, clarity was lost. The viola and cello turned to mud. It was difficult to hear individual lines. The performance is exciting as hell so I didn't mind but I want to second Jens' warning. If you think the sound might be a problem for you, you should consider one of his other choices.

Now:

I don't give a damn what anybody says this is a fine set of Martinu's symphonies. Perhaps not ideal for some, but I very much enjoy Thomson's performances. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra play with fire and passion. Listening to "Symphony No. 5" right now. I do enjoy Jarvi's and Belohlavek's performances as well, but Thomson brings out more unique textures that I haven't heard before. Beautiful recordings.

A very good box.  I also have the Ančerl Gold edition with nos. 5 & 6 which cannot be faulted, of course . . . I thoroughly enjoy Thomson's cycle all the same.

Thread duty:

Last night on the 'T' I listened to some (*ahem*) "pallid" Ravel, the effervescent Rapsodie espagnole, played by the Detroit Symphony under the direction of Paul Paray.

Luke Ottevanger's Canzone is what I listened to this morning.

Followed by Dmitri Tiomkin's score for the John Wayne movie Red River.

I am jealous!  It just won't be possible for me to download that until . . . Monday, I think : (

What are these speakers you consider "Mid-Fi?"

Happy birthday, Ray!

Thanks Karl and Opus106.  Just for the record, I was born in '74 and am now 36 years old.  Not born in '36 and turned 74.  Just to clarify.  :D
