Don't I know it  ;D  Just outside our bedroom window is a prime spot for cat mating...a feline lover's lane. I don't know what draws the neighborhood cats to that spot, but their Xenakis-like serenades have been going on for years.

Just wonder why?  Isn't Simon Rattle only in his early 60's?

His perfectionist tendencies leave me cold.

Let the Prokofiev marathon commence!  Happy b-day Sergei. :)

Excellent! : )

I'll get around to some Prokofiev later. Right now Tournemire is calling out to me (might have something to do with the H. Brian thread  ;) ). The First Symphony. Romantique.

I think so too (actually, I think it's more interesting). And it's in D minor. Of course it's good--it's in D minor! (Does anyone else miss D minor's contributions? Ever since he decided the end of the civilization was nigh, and retreated to the peak oil thread, it just hasn't been the same here.)

Sarge

I miss D minor.  I just don't why he all of a sudden stopped posting about classical music.  Did he fall out of love with classical music, I wonder?

You know Ozawa has absolute control in Prokofiev's 2nd symphony, I feel like this is awesome!  Didn't feel that way before.

Shostakovich: Jazz Suites

First listen to this newly arrived recording! - sounds good so far, shows quite a different side to Shostakovich!  :D

Yes, a thousand times, yes!  That was the performance which illuminated the Second for me!

Gosh, a very nice sounding harpsichord recording - it sounds positively enormous during the gavotte of No.6. This seems to me to be a near ideal combination of a clearheaded approach to the works combined with sparkling playing and a great sounding recording with a nice amount of space around the instrument without allowing the notes to get swamped - perhaps my new favourite in these works along with Rousset II and Gilbert (his tempi choices work wonders).

Awesome Karl, I should have listened to you earlier.  It's just that I'm not much of an Ozawa fan.

karlhenning

Understood; Ozawa has certainly had his turkeys.

Moving on to Prokofiev's Fifth, Celi conducting the Stuttgarters.

Just listened to the First, too. As I said on the Brian thread - I love it. Especially the slow movement, Largo. I think I can add Tournemire to the list with Magnard, Roussel, Debussy, Ravel, Schmitt and a few others I forget...

Say more about that, Sarge, at your convenience.
