Now playing CD4 - T6 and Francesco da Rimini from the following set for a first listen.  This has been an excellent set ...

I own this set as well and I haven't even heard a note of it yet. :( Perhaps I'll give the 6th a spin sometime next week.

Violin Concerto #1 in A Minor

Perhaps my favorite concerto for any instrument.

The SQ of this set is excellent IMO and the performance by the Philharmonia Orchestra was quite impressive.

This set has also been collecting dust for a while before I jumped on it ...

Listening to Symphony No. 6. A turbulent, but rewarding work that only gets better with repeated listening.

First run of this disc with Nicolas Lebègue's complete works for harpsichord in two Books, the 1st from 1677 and the 2nd from 1687. These pieces were published in Amsterdam and were known throughout Europe.

Canadian Bibiane Lapointe studied with Scott Ross and Ton Koopman. She sounds like an excellent harpsichordist, has she recorded more? She plays a double-manual harpschord by Bruce Kennedy after French 17th c. models.

Thanks. I think the favorite concertos/symphonies thread is causing me to dig up old favorites. I interestingly, it also is actually causing me to also pull out works and composers I don't like (e.g. Shostakovich or Schoenberg ), so that I can feel justified in voting against their works. Maybe I will develop an appreciation for Schoenberg after all? Though I doubt it, Shostakovich maybe, but I would seriously doubt Schoenberg. Interestingly, years ago, I initially started off not liking the Sibelius Violin concerto, it has since grown on me over the years and has replaced or is close to replacing the Bruch first violin concerto as my favorite violin concerto.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Hany.

Oh, wow, that sounds like exactly my tempo for the Sibelius concerto. Too many performers these days treat the opening movement like a dirge.

Weird Amazon review ahoy:

"I like his approach to Schubert. Fray actually plays softly once in a while, and not for narcissistic effect, which in itself distinguishes him from countless others these days. I look forward to hearing this artist play Beethoven, because I was impressed by a little video clip of him playing, with a superb violinist, Op. 30 #2 (the C Minor Violin/Piano Sonata). Maybe we have reached a new era in which musicians will no longer prize the shallow careerism of the Reagan/Thatcher era instead of the genius of Bach, Mozart and Schubert."
