What consistently impresses me in both Shostakovich & Prokofiev is how they handle even "mundane" musical projects with artistry and integrity.

This is the mark of a versatile composer.

Inspired by recent goings on, I am listening to this, but not this release.  It's an old BIS set with Jarvi I have, but probably the same recordings.  Why have I so neglected this composer?  Quite amazing music, like all the Northern composers of the same era.   :D  It is brilliant to be switched back on to Stenhammar.

I wonder if BIS bought the rights to some of those Jarvi recordings with Gothenbergers?

Franck, Eduard (1817-1893) - Orchestral & Chamber Works on Audite - just added a new post in the Franck (i.e. Eduard-Richard, father & son) thread which needed to be rejuvenated - check there for further information on these MIA 19th century composers -  ;D

Listening to Symphony No. 4 which is surely a 20th Century masterpiece. Remarkable and such a deeply felt symphony but given it's subject matter, it's no surprise.

Continuing the Debussy set....

[asin]B000BL99UK[/asin]

Just finished off Disc 1 with:
Marche écossaise
Berceuse héroïque
Musiques pour le Roi Lear

Absolutely brilliant music. Debussy is simply amazing - I am well and truly in a Debussy phase now, so look forward to continuing this set.

I'm so glad you're enjoying the Martinon set, Daniel. Debussy was a genius.

By the way, Daniel, have you listened to that Honegger/Karajan recording yet?

Listening to Sinfonietta on Estonia Motifs. I love this work. I don't know why I just love this folk-influenced music so much, which is why I love composers like Bartok, Janacek, Stravinsky (early works), and Lyadov so much.
