He rushes through it, rather, doesn't he, Nav? No breathing space between the phrases, and many of the rapid figurations are smashed clean through.

One of the worst Sibelius cycles on the market IMHO. Maazel has no affinity for Sibelius' idiom.

On Youtube, now:

John Adams
Harmonielehre, 1^ movement

Edo de Waart

Just finished the first movement, what impressive, thrilling music, I really enjoyed it! Wonderful melodies, excellent dynamics, great orchestration. ;D Waart's performance was extremely fine, beautifully played and with an involving rythm, I'm looking forward to listening to the other movements. :)

Glad you enjoyed it, Ilaria. It is a fine work. One of Adams best. The other two movements are just as involving as the first.

Well, his cycle of Sibelius' Symphonies with the Wiener Phil is amazing anyway.

Thank you, John. I'm very excited to listen to the rest of the composition. :)

Very fine, indeed, Ilaria.  I owned the Vienna Phil cycle first of all;  a pity that John does not appreciate its virtues, but the Pittsburgh cycle I am finding very worthwhile, too.

Vanska is my favorite Sibelius conductor. I do like Ashkenazy and Berglund (Helsinki EMI cycle) a lot as well.

Glad you enjoyed the first movement, Ilaria! Hope you enjoy the other two as well. John is of course correct in saying that both of those are absolutely excellent too. I love the soundworlds in these two movements in particular.... and the ending is thrilling!

Well, a matter of taste, certainly, but I'm not fond of Ashkenazy in Sibelius at all.

Absolutely, Daniel. Wagner was such a master and Gotterdammerung is one of the best works he has composed IMHO.
