Disc 3: Op. 18 nos. 3 and 5, Serioso

Ah yes, I recently bought this box set after posting an inquiry for recommendations of Beethoven´s string quartets on the GMG board.  A fine set indeed  0:)!

A little while ago, M Forever posted a download of a '91 Asahina, All Japan Symphony Orchestra performance of Strauss's Eine Alpensinfonie from an OOP Canyon Classics release. I am listening to that now... It is so good, I had to craft my own cover art for it as I could not find the original online.

The image is a crop from an 1853 painting by an H. Baumgartner (coming up blank on searches for more information on the artist) called View in the Bavarian Alps... I thought it appropriate for the symphonic hike through them. :)

I did the same with another Alpensinfonie I took from an online source. Mine was this:

and this (back cover)

These are ca. 1900 views of Garmisch in the bavarian Alps. This is where Strauss sojourned for the last 30-40 years of his life, and where he composed the Alpensinfonie.

You'll find it in this Asahina thread here. :)

Very nice source images there, Lilas. That painting you used for the back cover is quite nice.

It's a beautiful place. Here's a pic I took 2 years ago (looking up at the Zugspitze)

A quick edit and the cover could just as easily be this:

Bartok ~ Concerto for Orchestra

Debussey ~ La Mer

Another download (2005 live Boulez. Mahler 2nd) care of M Forever--which I have crafted another cover for... the things iTunes coverflow makes me do.  :D

Oh man, beclemund, that's a horrible, horrible cover pic... :o ;D

How about using this:

Or maybe this (a little kitschy, too, but somehow also expressive, I think):

Is that Lawrence of Arabia again? ;D

(I mean the first one.)

Hehehe. I did not mean to suggest my covers were good. ;)

I really like that first image you posted. The second, not so much, and it would be hard to crop to a square image. The last Mahler 2nd cover I did was to replace a boring picture of Michael Gielen on Hänssler:

I guess I went more sacred with the Boulez one. The wife liked it, and she is usually a good judge, but maybe I will take it back to the drawing board.
