Der lächelnde Schatten

Good job there Karl!  I just listened to it.  :)

Yeah, @Karl Henning wrote a hip piece here for sure. I think he captured RRK's unique musical vibe expertly. Fun!

One of my rare allusions to the dark underbelly of Buffalo.

If you ask me, there is no feeling in the world quite like knowing that the Chairman of your Department makes free to use his power in efforts towards your removal from study.

Karl, you have reminded me of something similar!

Around 2009, when we were considering returning to our Toledo house, which had been for sale off and on for over 2 years, while we were employed in Columbus, I began looking for teaching positions back in the Toledo area.

There was an opening for a History teacher at a public school in a rather prosperous area of southern Michigan.  After making it through the opening interviews, I was asked to teach a formal class in a Senior Advanced Placement History course, while the chairman of the History Department observed me.

The class, knowing that nothing I was doing would be graded, nevertheless responded quite well to my semi-Socratic Methods, and was attentive and asking questions and laughing at my quips.   ;D

The problem was that the chairman of the History Department was absent for this!  After more than half the time was over, he finally came in, coffee cup in hand, and dressed in blue jeans, gym shoes, and a sweatshirt, and with a very Beatnik-looking goatee, although he was younger than I was.

As soon as he looked at me, in my vested suit with my best tie, standing in the middle of the students, his face took on one of the nastiest expressions I have ever seen, and I knew that I would not receive the position.  He said nothing to me and went to sulk in the back of the room with the New York Times, where he deliberately ignored me by reading the newspaper.

When the bell rang, some of the students applauded me, which only caused the man to scowl even more, which had seemed impossible.  I approached him and introduced myself, but the frown stayed on his face, he did not stand up, and only mumbled that I should return to the main office.

Either he found it annoying that he had to observe me, because he had already chosen a candidate for the position, or he had decided that I was NOT in any way going to receive his recommendation, as soon as he had seen me.

Things turned out fine anyway: we eventually sold our house, bought a house in Columbus, and I happily taught Latin there for 13 more years.

Yes, sudden animosity is an interesting mystery!

I think I may be done with the "expanded edition" of Down Along the Canal to Minerva Road, Op. 149b. I let it sit while I made my last pre-Easter grocery run.

Cool!  Are you feeling more limber and stronger (I know that it hasn't been long)?

I hope you didn't wear your customary hot pink leotard? I mean I'm sure some people like it, but please understand that you're frightening the more sensitive viewers, especially when you sung a note-perfect rendition of Tiny Tim's Tiptoe Through the Tulips. ;D

Heh-heh!   ;D   Well, who knows what his problem was?  As I wrote, things worked out for the best!
