Papy Oli

Good morning/day/evening All

I just thought i'd "formally" re-introduce myself, if only for good manners  ;)

- Still called "Papy"
- Olivier on the French birth certificate.
- now 33...
- much less hair at the top than last time round (i'll blame the headphones, shall I ?  :P)
- still based in Suffolk, England

- I have been a year and a half into classical music now.. initially via Head-Fi... about 70 CD's so far.... plus the 155 CD Bach Brilliant Edition  >:D

- Favorite genres : Symphonies and choral music

- Favorite composers to date : Mahler (M5 then M6 then M1 then M2 then M2 then M2 then M2...), Brahms (3rd & 4th, German Requiem), Bach (Masses, Oratorios).

- Favorite conductors : Kleiber, Zinman, Klemperer...not that it would mean much as such really...i just have some very enjoyable records with them on....

- Struggling with : Chamber Music, the Eastern European/Russian section of classical composers (Rachmaninov, Penderecki, Shosta...), Organ music, Glenn Gould's humming  :P

- Aiming at : going through the Bach Cantatas (the main purpose of buying the Bach edition), discovering Bruckner (cycle on the way  :) ), and break the struggles above eventually....

Dreading : A currently growing Mahler addiction that overshadows the rest at the moment, and consequent multiples purchases of the same pieces  ;D

Enough of me now, the rest on the boards  ;D

One of the best and healthiest addictions to become a victim of! Try and see how you like Boulez conducting Mahler!

Welcome, do post often, please!

I can well empathize... ;D

Welcome again, and look forward to your comments, on M2 and anything else that you're hearing.

Now, that's the last thing we'd want  ;D

be at peace... the word "may" was there to underline the likelihood or more exactly the lack thereof  :P

Bienvenue, Papy-Olivier!

Try to persevere in exploring the russian/soviet composers. You'll discover that Mahler's influence is  pervasive in Shostakovich's music. A modern extension of much the same kind of musical personality. Bruckner's music has deeper and more durable impact IMO 0:). And do give a try to Sibelius, if it's not done already!

Bonjour André et merci !

i actually received that order yesterday :

http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,13.msg28760.html#msg28760

and just started to Listen to Bruckner this afternoon... and Sibelius will indeed follow suit... i'll try and work out some comments/impressions as i go along  ;)

Maybe Shostakovitch's time will come later...i won't give up on him just yet.... I had already posted some CDs of Rachmaninov and Penderecki on the Buy/Swap board here a few days back but without reply anyway, so maybe i'll retract on those ones and give it another go in a few months time  :)
