Besides "everybody knows it", do you have an irrefutable proof that she really said that? Because the matter is far from settled.

Your point being?

Gordon Gecko in the movie Wall St NEVER actually said, "greed is good".  It's remembered like that in history because it's more succinct and...well, essentially, that's how history worked out.

It's akin to a famous Picasso quote.  After showing a portrait he did of a patron, the woman was aghast. "But I don't look like that!" she said.  His response: "You will."   We all get the point (btw, this story is also somewhat altered, but there's nothing wrong with a little historical metaphor making.)

Nonetheless, the point here is McCain DID say "the fundamentals are strong".  And, protest as much as he and you want, he was NOT talking about "American workers" at the time.

So whether Marie ever or actually was the first to say that statement is secondary to this conversation.  And, hey, history can get it wrong sometimes.  Just ask Al Gore.

The quote is from '92, but I think it says a lot about someone's character if they can call even their own wife a name which is arguably the worst thing you can call a woman.

In front of the press no less, bc she was teasing him in a playful manner.

Classy guy, that McCain.
Trouble is, Politico.com reporters were unable to find any evidence that this story is true. The story was "broken" by an anti-McCain partisan based on the word of three "anonymous sources," whom the partisan claims are scared enough that if they are actually found they might change their stories. Politico cannot find any other sources, aides, journalists or witnesses who are able to independently verify the truth of this rumor.

Mmm...not sure about that.  Rolling Stone, for instance, have published articles recounting that story.  If it's outright untrue, it would be libel.  I'd have to reread the article to see how they phrased the passage, if it was a matter of "some sources say that x happened"...

My point being exactly this: in all probability, the story is false and Marie Antoinette never said that.

Flor, you do this a lot.  You take some peripheral element of te conversation, highlight that, and make that the focus, in an attempt cnsciously or not to divert the topic.  Either way, the point is McCain DID say "the fundamentals are strong" as the market was actively collapsing.  That declararation and event is fact.  Microwave a tub of popcorn and youtube it sometime.

Good God! What has it to do with McCain? Have I ever denied he said that? Have you ever encountered a post of mine supporting, or just defending, him? I just reacted to a legend which is being widely circulated without having the least historical basis.

I don't know; I think that if you put the word, 'stupid' in front of it; that's worse.
