Inspired by Adam's Mozart thread.  Limit to 5 discs.

PS - Dm, you can't pick 5 different recordings of Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor  ;)

Here are mine:

2 - Cello Sonatas (Rostropovich/Serkin)/DG

3 - Ein deutches Requiem, Op. 45 (Czech Philharmonic/Giuseppe Sinopoli/Prague Philharmonic Choir)/DG

4 - Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15 (Kovacevich, piano/London Philharmonic/Sawallisch); Two Songs for alto voice, viola and piano, Op. 91 (Ann Murray, alto/Nobuko Imai, viola/Kovacevich, piano)/EMI Classics

5 - Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68; Variations on a Theme by Haydn (St. Anthony), Op. 56a; Tragic Overture, Op. 81(London Philharmonic/Sawallisch)/EMI Classics

This is just an excuse to bump the thread for more chamber music recs.

Lethe, great set, that I've almost worn out from playing so many times!   :)

Well then...

Schubert - Unfinished Symphony; Wagner - Isolde's Liebestod (Kleiber / VPO)
R. Strauss - Don Juan (Ormandy / SOBR)
Brahms - Symphony No 3 (Kubelik / SOBR)
Brahms - Hungarian Dances, selection (Janowski / Pittsburgh)

Whatever you do, don't ask what the couplings are.  ;D

I couldn't imagine a Brahms collection (however small) without the Third and Fourth Symphonies.

Or without the German Requiem.

Do the same rules apply here as in my Mozart thread?  A two-disc set is within the rules, but boxes are out (unless it's the enitre thing)?  (BTW, if someone wanted in the  mozart thread to just have five interpretations of any one Mozart piece, that's fine by me...my idea was to find the best interpretations of the best pieces)...

Anyhoo...my Brahms five...

PCs 1&2 Gilels/Jochum (a two-fer, along with Fantasias!)

Complete Trios (some great Beaux Arts Trio work)

Complete Piano Quartets (more BAT!)

Cello Sonatas, with Rostropovich and Serkin

Clarinet Quintet, de peyer (this is the only interpretation I have...if there's another, better...would love to know...I would assume Karl would be the authority for that info...or hornteacher....or many others on here   :))

What I'm learning more and more is that overall I am simply not a symphony person, except in a handful of instances (I even reach for my Liszt piano interpretations of LVB's symphonies before I reach for the "real" thing).  So, yes, this is my "BRAHMS GREATEST HITS" rather than an actual "BRAHMS GREATEST HITS"; the stuff that I listen to for my own personal pleasure.
Hardly any of us expects life to be completely fair; but for Eric, it's personal.

I don't know if it's better (because it's the only one I've heard), but I definitely recommend THIS ONE, if you can find it.
