Although I'm much more into Romantic music, for this one.....I'd have to think it's almost a no-brainer.

BWV for me!  ;D  as long I could have a lot of modern instrument recordings.  0:)

What next?  Filet mignon v Big Mac?  (Seemingly unfair to Ralph, I know, but a one-to-one correspondence is not intended.)

RVW might have suggested voting for Bach, given his love of the St Matthew Passion.

That's because the Bachaholics are busy listening to music which speaks for itself and the geni... er, brainiaciness of its composer. 0:)

I think that's enough RVW bashing for today.

Currently listening to: Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 - Linde and his Consort

Man does not live by Bach alone.

When I'm in the mood for RVW, no amount of Bach is going to fill the bill.

On the other hand when you have day after day in which there's nothing to do but stare out at the sea, the last thing you want is a chorus shouting out "Behold, the SEA!"

Ah, now the potential deserted island inhabitants are actually pondering what life on that horrible island might be like.  Point very well taken.  (Bach doesn't have any oceanic choruses, does he?)

More likely to be able to build some kind of rudimentary raft/signalling device/fire out of the complete Bach+packaging than the RVW.

I voted Bach, but only because I'm not yet acquainted with RvW (I haven't been to Boston to see Karl yet). So maybe my vote should be retracted. I'm regretting it now.

Far be it for me to spoil anyone's fun......but can I just point out that it would currently be impossible to have the complete works of RVW on a Desert Island(I am presuming that Navneeth meant to listen to as opposed as the scores :)).

Until someone takes the trouble to record the Cantata "Folk Songs of the Four Seasons" that is ;D

Whichever floats your boat, Colin! ;) Even score-wise I think I would find Bach intellectually more stimulating, now that I'd have all the time in the world to discover stuff like this (http://www.ams.org/featurecolumn/archive/canons.html) and more! :)

It is entirely a matter of individual choice whether to pronounce the name as "ralph" with the stress on the 'l' or "rafe" with the 'l' silent.
So the great British actor Sir Ralph Richardson, the contemporary actor Ralph Fiennes and Ralph Vaughan Williams all pronounced their first name as 'Rafe'.

FWIW, here in the former colonies, both beat and beaten are given in the dictionary for the 3rd form of the verb . . . agreed, though, that it has a coll. overtone.

QuoteChoir of Clare College, Cambridge & Dmitri Ensemble, Cambridge, Sir David Willcocks

Both the Folk Songs of the Four Seasons and this arrangement of In Windsor Forest are world premiere recordings. The Folk Songs of the Four Seasons is a substantial work by Vaughan Williams, over 40 minutes long, for women's chorus and orchestra. It is the most significant of his works never to have been recorded in any format.

The Folk Songs of the Four Seasons was commissioned by the Women's Institute and first performed in 1950. The work has a Prologue and four sections: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

The coupling is the rare arrangement for women's voices, by Guthrie Foote and Vaughan Williams, of the Cantata In Windsor Forest based on choruses from the opera Sir John in Love.

This new Albion recording is issued to mark the 90th birthday of Sir David Willcocks on 30 December, 2009. Sir David is world famous for his recordings for EMI and for his work at King's College, Cambridge and the Bach Choir. For Sir David to record another major Vaughan Williams disc at the age of almost 90 is remarkable in itself and will ensure national and international interest in this recording.

Despite a tendency to deep despair when I look at the changes in our world during the past half century of my life, there are some which gladden my heart--none more, perhaps, than the wonder we all take so much for granted already:  Instantaneous communication in a de facto global lingua franca between an Indian in Madras and an Englishman in West Sussex about their shared passion for great music.  If there is hope for our wayward species, perhaps it will be manifested in the ability of the WWWeb to bring us all together with shared understanding of what we all have in common...?

Cheers, bros!
