The "Oxford" Symphony is technically not a London Symphony but I included it anyway for the sake of arbitrariness and because it was performed at one of the Salomon concerts. (And because it would be my #4 choice)
102, 101 and 94 for me (in roughly that order).
98, 96 & Military.
Philosophical question: If no 97 is called "Untitled", is it really untitled?

Philosophical question: If no 97 is called "Untitled", is it really untitled?
In fact, it is significantly more untitled than a symphony that merely has no title. I mean, this one actually SAYS it's untitled right on the cover. Geez.
(I can actually think of a couple of pieces called "Untitled"—Wolfgang Rihm's string quartet
Ohne Titel, and Schumann's ⁂ (which means approximately
[title redacted]) from the Album für die Jugend.)
The Cat, The Minor, The Fart, also known as 99, 95, 93.
Sarge
We should have one called "The minor Cat Fart"

Are "Unfinished" works ever going to be finished?

I know, right? When I was little and first heard Schubert's "Unfinished", I was expecting it literally end abruptly.
As for the Haydn, I've only heard "The Clock". I was looking into exploring Haydn because I have liked what (little) I heard, but then I got distracted/frustrated by the whole little band versus big band thing and gave up temporarily.
92, 103 and 104.

Haydn is better in little HIP band.
I vote 92, 104. 100. Like 'em all, but those are the most memorable for me, partly just due to which recordings I had when I was 20.
97 is actualyy titled Jeux. I predict it will finish well back. Again.

Odd that an Austrian composer would give a British piece a French name...

'mediocre' is cognate in German, French, and English.
>:D  ;)

Haydn didn't name hardly any of his symphonies. It was a fad started in later times, usually by the Brits, sometimes by the Germans. That said, I have never ever heard the name
Jeux applied to any Haydn symphony. Curious where ken picked that up. :)

Haydn is better in little HIP band.
Not the Londons, though. They were composed for a sizeable orchestra and sound superb performed by a big band. My favorite versions are by Szell/Cleveland and Norrington/Stuttgart.

I'll have to give all of these a listen then. Thanks!

You absolutely must.
Sarge, you can have big HIP groups, no?
The Paris were done with a pretty big orchestra I think.
The only non HIP Londons I have are HvK. Not his best :( . On vinyl I had a grab bag, but some Szell and some Davis, both excellent.
Oops, I have Fischer's complete cycle too.
96, 101, 104.

Oh sure. I was responding to your "little" qualifier, not the HIP.

Incidentally, so smitten am I with Hoggy Haydn, and various HIP accounts of the Paris, that I don't think a single London would make my top 20 Haydn symphonies anymore.

Yes, that was careless of me.
Any opinions on the Minkowski set? Reactions are incredibly divided. More than I have ever seen on any recordings.

I can't get my Favorites list down to less than 31...and even that is tough ;D But even if I could whittle it down to 20, some of the Londons would make the cut. Certainly 93 and 99.

It's extremely willful and with a tendency towards extreme tempi. Of course I love it.

I was initially very enthusiastic, The longer I've lived with it, though, the less enamored I've become. His interpretive quirks don't bother me (the Surprise, the Drumroll) but I think his Minuets are, in general, too fast. I also prefer more aggressive brass. I suppose I'd still recommend it but check again in a couple of months ;)

I'm much vaguer. The low number daytimes, most of the S&D stuff in the 40s. If I picked one it would be 39. But I love that Hoggy box in toto.

Yeah, those were my favorites at first. All that storm and stress. But I've mellowed with age...and have had meds prescribed ;)

They're all my favorite! I can't say I like one better than all the rest.
If you really insist, the ones most recently listened to, which at the moment means numbers 96 and 97, but later on tonight that will likely change to 98 and 99, since I am now working my way through the Bernstein/NYPO Sony box. [At the moment, I'm indulging in a pianistic interlude--Ashkenazy playing Chopin's Etudes.]

For me the S&D, some of the named early ones, a few in the 60s and 70s, Paris, Chunnel and Londons are my favorites. My top shelf are S&D and Paris.
Don't forget my lost poll of all the Haydn Symphonies (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,21169.msg675724.html#msg675724)
#94, #100, and #104. It could change by tomorrow, though. ;D Still, I've played #104 and so it will be a perennial favorite. Haydn is really fun to play. 8)

Even to a HIPster like me that looks tempting. How good, compared to Szell, Klemp, Jochum, Fischer?

Better than F. At least as good as Szell and Solti. Do not have K or J.
Only major flaw is the cardboard sleeves, which are extremely tight.
This is the Sony set with some of the masses and The Creation. It is better and of course contains more music then the equivalent DG box.

I generally think Lenny was better in NY, based on the limited number of DGs I have heard.
Just heard 99 today for the first time. My favorite Haydn symphony so far, along with 88. Maybe I'll try 77, 66, 55, etc ;D.
